Flowers for Algernon was one of the most heartbreaking stories that I have ever listened to.

The terror and sadness of it comes from how incredibly human the characters act.
There are Highs and Lows, Outbursts and reconciliations and all the while confusion about why life can be so unfair sometimes.

I doubt that anyone who has listened to this (expertly narrated) audio book, will be able to ever forget the fate of Charlie Gordon.

The story is very touching and also quite sad. I think reading the book would be better than listening to the audiobook, because it makes the changes in Charlie’s writing much clearer.

Mesmerizing journey of Charlie Gordo and his fate.

A deep psychological insight into a complex character. It's very detailed, realistic and well written. I perceived the book as mainly sad and depressing, as the main character constantly struggles to understand himself and the world around him and I had to cry sometimes. Nevertheless I got absorbed into the mind of Charly and commiserated with him, which was an intense experience.

Damn his voice really gets the nuance and emotions across! I really love the voices he gives to all the characters.

Best performance I've heard

Die Geschichte hat Themen, die sehr in die späten 60er Jahre passen (die Borniertheit der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft, sexuelle Befreiung).
Trotzdem gibt es genügend zeitgenössischen Bezug zur geistigen/sozialen Entwicklung der Hauptfigur Charlie. Das Buch ist sicherlich deprimierend (passenderweise auch so gelesen), dennoch mochte ich es.

It was amazing - I’ve heard the audio book quite some time ago now and it still haunts me.
I’ve cried, I’ve laughed, I’ve stayed up late to listen to this intriguing story. It’s very thought provoking, although I couldn’t really discuss it right after and had to take some time to process first. The ending is not unexpected but that makes it all the more torturous.
The speaker was great, too, it’s just that I would love to actually see the changing language as it makes up such an important part of the storytelling, which I found especially striking.
Will totally read, maybe also listen to it, again, and recommend to everyone I know. I’m aware that it’s not a hidden gem but still criminally underrated in my opinion!

Probably even better as a physical book

I'm making this short. I liked the beginning and the early middle part very much. Also ich really think the way the book is written/being read is a perfect choice. And Last but not Least i think, the hole book in total is presented emotionally feelable (if u know what i mean). But what i didn't like was the storytelling choice roughly in the late middle part of the book when they did not focus that much on algernon anymore. Also the ending itself felt longer than it needed to be. Sadly I also kinda predicted the ending early into the novel. In general there was much unused potential :( .
But to end with a good thing: Even for me (not a native englisch speaker) the english in which this book was written, felt absolutely natural and understable at the same time.
