The author makes bold claims that she knows will draw attention and controversy, and it worked in her favor in the sales of her books. But as a scholar, her level of argument and nuanced engagement with different schools of thoughts is disappointing. For instance, she says that prostitution should be a more readily available career choice for women because it is a lot better paid than other career choices. But it is currently overpriced precisely because it is banned or stigmatized in many countries, hence increasing the scarcity, and if it becomes a more readily available choice, like in any saturated market, the price will race to the bottom. Of course some arguments are solid, but I feel that a lot of these arguments are undermined as she tries to make underdeveloped and bold claims in other areas (such as Economics) that she isn’t an expert in.

It was easy listening, and I think, I will remember her main argument, which I understand as women should be allowed to profit from their higher erotic capital. Being against that is being against the interests of women, according to Hakim. Yet, I do feel somewhat uncomfortable, when sex is reduced or conceptualised as a quid pro quo, as something women historically have been forced to be selling too cheaply, by patriarchal moral and institutions. But - then again, maybe that’s just because I’m a man… Yet, I would also hate to see my daughters selling themselves for monetary gains.

Hakim has some good ideas but her theory is too generalised, relies on truism instead of facts and does a lot of explaining by “imagine two girls, on of them is x the other is y”. She presents her idea universal and universally applicable while its probably the opposite. Interesting but I wouldn’t recommend it for education cause it could be misleading and potentially harmful.
