In 1879, eighteen-year-old Liv, like thousands of her fellow citizens, leaves the hard times in Norway for a new life in Minnesota. She’s accompanied by her beautiful sixteen-year-old sister, Marit, who vanishes within moments of arriving at Ellis Island.
Officials dismiss the disappearance as confusion in the crush of immigrants, insisting that she must have wandered off. But Liv knows Marit would never do that. Dockworkers whisper darker possibilities. Even with the assistance of overworked officials, no trace of Marit can be found. Agonized, and with her savings dwindling, Liv must decide how much she’s willing to risk to find her sister.
If she fails, Marit may be lost forever in a country that promised a better life. But Liv must finally turn her attention to her own future. She boards a train for Minnesota as planned but never stops searching and hoping since she senses Marit is alive.
