FOUR PEOPLE, TWO ANGELS, ONE CITY
The world has been baptised in nuclear fire. Arcadia, the sole bastion of humanity, is all that is left. Under perpetual dark clouds, none still live who have ever seen the sun, the moon or the stars. In the cramped neon-drenched streets dreams lay scattered like trash. Violence, depravity and a desperate need for self-preservation infests every crack and crevice of the stagnant city.
John Kendrix, adopted son of Billionaire Alexander Kendrix and Dominus Carnifex of the Novus Vaticana walks a thin line between righteous and damned. When his home comes under attack from forces unknown, everything John ever knew and loved becomes twisted by lies and corruption.
A Cyberpunk thriller drenched in Edlritch Mystery and Cyber-Catholicism.
That said, there are definitely areas that could be improved. At times, the story feels more like fan fiction or a shōnen manga, especially in how frequently the protagonist is praised by other characters. The Catholic aspect of the worldbuilding also feels somewhat shallow; it never really comes across as an institution with much depth or mystery. That may have been a conscious choice by the author, but in my opinion it represents wasted potential.
The antagonists likewise don’t always feel like genuine obstacles to the protagonist, though I still found some of them enjoyable. Overall, I’m confident these elements will improve in future books.
My biggest criticism is the excessive use of phrases like “chuckled” and “rolled his eyes.” By a certain point, it became distracting, as these expressions appeared in nearly every other paragraph. This may be due to a lack of professional editing.
But overall a enjoyable novel and I think you should give this book a chance. I'm looking forward to the upcoming books and how the author improves his writing style. With some tweaks, this could become a great book series.
The narrator is amazing as always.
