Über diesen Titel

In a magisterial work, Jaan Puhvel unravels the prehistoric Indo-European origins of the traditions of India and Iran, Greece and Rome, of the Celts, Germans, Balts, and Slavs. Utilizing the methodologies of historical linguistics and archaeology, he reconstructs a shared religious, mythological, and cultural heritage. Separate chapters on individual traditions as well as on recurrent themes—god and warrior, king and virgin, fire and water—give life to Comparative Mythology as both a general introduction and a detailed reference.

This book is almost entirely about Indo-European mythology, which isn't too terrible, that's largely what I was interested in too; however, it is heavily inclined towards reconstructing mythic characters, i.e. establishing a pantheon of Proto-Indo-European deities and their respective relationships, while the actual "mythology," i.e. the narratives where they take part in, still makes occasional appearances, especially towards the end, but was cut comparatively short. I also missed a methodology section. He hints at it a couple of times, but I would have wished for more depth. As far as books of historical mythology go, this is still one of the better ones though, at least it actually applies the comparative method to go back in time, which is rare indeed, so for that alone, 4 stars.

Fine, but not as exhaustive as I'd have wanted
