Über diesen Titel
1900 was a time of advancement for women’s suffrage, their bold new vision of self, physically exemplified by the tournament-hardened golfing girl, who in a determined rush to modernity elbowed the stagnant Victorian-minded matron from her pedestal. Beatrix Hoyt, winner of the first three USGA National Championships, 1896, 1897 & 1898, demonstrated what could be achieved by women willing to seize the mantel of realized physical competence, challenging her entrenched partner, and charging into the lead at the start of the modern century!
In 1887, a Knickerbocker in a cow pasture in Yonkers, New York struck the first golf ball in America. A decade later Amzi Lorennzo Barber had a scheme to forge a residential exurb—by carving emerald fairways out of Westchester’s forest primeval. Financed by wealthy Robber Barons of the Gilded Age, Ardsley Casino & Club forever changed the sleepy village of Dobbs Ferry nestled along the Hudson River. In 1897, ACC was recognized for its pioneering stance hosting a golfing match of thirty plucky women, an event considered quite risky for the time.
