Inhaltsangabe
In a dying Earth of wizards and walled cities, a boy climbs out of poverty when he becomes an assistant to a moneylender's debt collector, then enters a career as henchman to an ambitious young thaumaturge. But Baldemar's career as a wizard's minion goes sideways after a powerful entity left over from the creation of the cosmos finds him useful for its own ends.
Now he must tread a perilous path peopled by dukes and demons, spellslingers and secret agents, assassins and academics, plus a pair of vengeful wizards who want their stolen treasures returned.
His course will lead him through the Underworld and Overworld, and along shadowy paths in the tenebrous realm known as the Glooms, to a final confrontation that will test Baldemar's hard-won knowledge to the utmost.

entertaining and enjoyable!
I usually listen to audiobooks on my way to work, while cleaning up, or while cooking. But with this audiobook, I sat down on the couch because I was so captivated by it. That's not just because the book is written in an entertaining and zippy way, or because I enjoyed following Baldemar on his journey to overcome obstacles and land cat-like on his feet - or just get lucky.
I was also drawn into the story by the way the narrator managed to bring it to life: his voice captures emotion and builds tension at the right moments, while maintaining the perfect balance between intensity and pleasant speech. I also really enjoyed the voices the narrator gave to the characters in the book, so much so that I was delighted every time one of Baldemar's companions returned.
I look forward to hearing another audiobook from this narrator!
