Über diesen Titel
Four boys. One grocery cart. Sixty-five years.Jimmy Dawson won the Daytona 500 the first time he ever sat in a Cup car. He wrecked eighty-nine times after that, ten of them upside down at Talladega. Now he is seventy-one, and the doctors have a long name for what all those wrecks did to his memory. So he is writing it down while he still has it.He starts at the beginning: a schoolyard in Bangor, Maine, in 1961, where three boys spun him off a merry-go-round and he got up hollering that he was going to be a NASCAR driver. One of those boys became a surgeon. One became a judge. One became a minister who prayed before every fool thing Jimmy ever tried. Together they pushed a grocery cart down a hill, towed a seventy-five-dollar Chevrolet to a dirt track behind a tractor, and put four names on one small-town trophy. Now all four are back home, living in the same retirement residence, and the other three have a plan. They drag Jimmy's 1985 camper van out of a shed, hitch up a leaking tent trailer, and take him to the last five races of the season. Four old men, four bald tires, ten packs of hot dogs, and nobody remembered the gas. They think the trip is one last lap for Jimmy. Jimmy knows better.Told in Jimmy's own plain, funny, clear-eyed voice, One Last Lap is a road-trip novel about lifelong friendship, the memories we make for other people, and what is left when our own begin to go. It is for anyone who has ever had a friend who pushed.Go fast. Turn left.©2026 Troy Paterson (P)2026 Troy Paterson
