Governor Jenniffer González Colón signed a resolution formally requesting Puerto Rico’s admission as a state but what does that signature actually accomplish?

In this episode of Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes, Edwin Ortiz examines the resolution’s practical limits, the documented 2020 statehood petition, and the difference between advancing a party’s platform and establishing broad public consent.

We explore Puerto Rico’s 2024 plebiscite figures, compare them with Alaska and Hawaii’s statehood votes, and revisit federal lawmakers’ concerns about political division. We also consider appointed governors and PROMESA, asking whether Puerto Ricans retain meaningful authority over their future.

An official petition is one step. A binding decision by an informed electorate is another.
