Angelo Pizzo, screenwriter of two of the most beloved sports movies, Hoosiers and Rudy, shares the stories behind their creation. Hoosiers follows a troubled coach, played by Gene Hackman, who leads a small Indiana high school basketball team toward a state championship. Rudy stars Sean Astin as an unlikely Notre Dame football hopeful whose persistence becomes an enduring story of determination. Angelo discusses casting real basketball players, fighting to hire Dennis Hopper for his Academy Award–nominated performance, and the real Rudy’s relentless campaign to get his story on screen. He also reveals how Rudy brought together future collaborators Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, and why these films about ambition, redemption, and second chances continue to resonate across generations. Part one of a two-part conversation.
