Far beyond the crowded worlds of Earth, humanity’s scattered colonies survive because someone is always watching. On the lonely edges of explored space, members of the Space Frontier Watcher Service spend months at isolated posts, scanning the darkness for the Rumi raiders who strike without warning and disappear before Terran warships can catch them.

One Watcher stationed on the frozen moon Thirty has a simple assignment: observe, report, and never reveal his position. Then a private Terran spacecraft crosses the path of an approaching Rumi squadron. The crippled ship crashes nearby, and evidence suggests that someone survived. The Watcher has already sent the warning that may save distant cities, so his official duty is done. What happens next is a choice no regulation can make for him. Leaving his bunker could expose the hidden station and cost him his life, but remaining safely underground means abandoning an injured human being to the enemy. Armed with little more than his knowledge of Thirty’s brutal terrain, he goes outside.

The Watchers by George H. Smith turns an isolated frontier outpost into a tense hunt across an unforgiving alien landscape. Smith gives his narrator an engaging, conversational voice and steadily tightens the danger as hunter and hunted exchange roles. The result combines military science fiction, alien conflict, and frontier adventure before delivering a wonderfully memorable final revelation.

George H. Smith was a prolific American writer whose science fiction appeared in magazines including Fantastic Universe, Imagination, and Fantastic. His genre work includes novels such as The Path of Unreason and Satan’s Daughter, along with numerous short stories published during the 1950s and 1960s. He later produced a substantial body of paperback fiction across several genres.
