Does a second colostrum feeding give newborn calves an extra boost? In this episode of The Moos Room, Brad explores University of Minnesota research involving 150 dairy and beef-on-dairy calves that examined how a second colostrum meal—and feeding by bottle versus tube—affected immunity, health, appetite, and behavior.
On a farm delivering high-quality colostrum within one hour of birth, a second colostrum feeding eight hours later did not significantly increase blood IgG concentrations compared with feeding milk replacer. Brad discusses why that strong first feeding matters when interpreting the results and what the study revealed about second-meal intake, subsequent appetite, and feeding labor. Bottle-fed calves often left part of their meal unfinished, while researchers observed no colic events during the study’s first 72 hours under the feeding protocols evaluated.
The practical takeaway: prioritize the timing, quality, and quantity of the first colostrum feeding. Tune in for a discussion of how second feedings fit into calf management, why meal size and spacing matter, and why these findings do not rule out other benefits of continued colostrum or transition milk feeding.
