Judea is one of the most important regions in the modern world. As the center of two of the world’s great religions and extremely important to a third, its history has been littered with wars, insurrections, and religious revolutions. To say that it has had a turbulent past is to understate the case in the extreme. The history of Judea is, of course, inextricably linked to the history of the Jewish people, their dispersal throughout the Mediterranean world, and their reestablishment of the modern state of Israel in the wake of the horrors of the Holocaust. But among all the tumultuous events associated with Jewish history, few can rival the period of Roman rule during the 1st century A.D., when Roman attempts to suppress Jewish nationalism met with violent resistance. Ultimately, the Romans forcibly removed much of the Jewish population from the region, setting the stage for later events that continue to have a major impact on world history. Events in the region during the 1st century A.D. also brought about the birth of Christianity, a religious movement that has been at the forefront of European history ever since. When it comes to ancient conflicts, the Jewish-Roman Wars are among the best documented, and that is wholly due to the fact that a contemporary writer and occasional eyewitness wrote a history of the conflict almost as it was happening. In his position on both sides of the war at different times, Josephus was often an eyewitness to the events that he narrates, which is almost unheard of in most ancient history. Of course, the credibility that modern historians appreciate is the very reason Josephus has a tarnished reputation within the Jewish community. In the summer of the year 70 A.D., amid the ongoing war between the Jews and Romans, Josephus was in his Roman attire as he walked the ground below the walls of Jerusalem, close enough to be heard and nearly close enough to be hit.©2026 Charles River Editors (P)2026 Charles River Editors
