Treacy leaves Ireland, works in New Zealand as young asthma patients die from a pattern few are ready to act on, and later finds himself in Saddam Hussein's Iraq, where he treats the wounded, travels toward Halabja, and is detained and interrogated. Years later, his path takes him through postwar Liberia and earthquake-struck Haiti, as well as into unexpected encounters with people including Nelson Mandela and Michael Jackson.
But this is not simply a record of extraordinary places or famous names. It is a memoir about what happens when medicine stops being abstract: when the patient is in front of you, when institutions move too slowly, when fear becomes personal, and when showing up is sometimes the only useful thing left to do.
