Thursday, September 24th: Hebrews 12:18–24 contrasts the fear and distance of Mount Sinai with the welcome and celebration of Mount Zion. Sinai revealed God’s holiness and humanity’s need for a mediator, while Zion shows what Jesus has accomplished by bringing us near to God. Through Christ, believers have come to the heavenly Jerusalem, the joyful gathering of God’s people, and the Judge who welcomes us because justice has been satisfied. Jesus is the mediator of the new covenant, and His blood speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Where sin declares us guilty and shame tells us to stay away, the blood of Jesus announces forgiveness, reconciliation, and welcome. We approach God with reverence, but because of Jesus, we no longer have to remain at a distance.
