On November 16, 1961, the crew of the Greek freighter Captain Theo spotted a pale object in the waters between the Bahamas and Florida. It was eleven-year-old Terry Jo Duperrault, alive but severely weakened after roughly eighty-two hours alone on a small cork float.

Three days earlier, Terry Jo had been aboard the charter yacht Bluebelle with her parents, Arthur and Jean Duperrault, her brother Brian, her sister René, captain Julian Harvey, and Harvey’s wife, Mary.
