The book starts with Jan and Hal going on a trip, Hal dies in an accident and Jan goes into a coma. We then meet Mac and Milly. Milly dies and Mac is placed in a coma by the Wizard Mclean, Mac's great grandfather. Mac and Jan meet while they are both in a comatose state. Mac escapes his coma by defeating death. He then helps Jan escape her coma by beating Death.

Next, we meet Mac's parents. His mother is a serial killer and his father is a drunk. They live on a farm with Wizard Mclean. The wizard keeps a demon named Ladd in the barn. He runs a murder cult for Ladd. They hope to aid the demon in crossing over to our dimension in a physical form. Mac and Jan work to stop this from happening. They are aided by an angel.
