although it could hardly be obvious from the title, the author takes an analytic, nearly ethnographic look at the bdsm community, with all its sweet and bitter parts. she also presents her journey as a coming of age quest during which she gets to know herself better, become more emphatic, and ready to form a deep connection with a partner. one other aspect discovered in the book is related to judgement. "everyone is fighting a battle we know nothing about", so before we judge them we should think if we really know them so well as to be in the position to judge. also, great book!!! totally recommend it
