Heartbreaking, compelling and brilliant. Read it!

If I could give more than 5 stars, believe me I would. This is one of the most compelling, heartbreaking books I've ever read. It has captivated me and doesn't let go, even afer a while. I'm actually not the over-emotional type at all, but I caught myself crying while being torn between quitting (or pausing) because I couldn't stand it any longer and reading along because I got so involved. I really couldn't put the book down.
Dawood and Kris and their unwavering love through all the years captivated me so deeply. I laughed with them when they had their good times and I cried when... okay, no spoilers here.

Moreover this book is so well researched! it's fiction, but it's also a lesson in history.
I have family in the US and I can recall all the emotions, the fury and anger and hopes that followed 9/1, Iraqi war2 and the hunt for O.bL. and the mindset that led to some of these "decisions" described in the book that came out later. In this parts, the book isn't fictional at all.
Some reviewers wrote that there is too much politics involved. But that's exactly what earns my five stars. It's not just a story of a great love. No, it is also a highly thrilling analysis of the mindset and cowboy politics in the USA after 9/11 just as a view to muslim culture without bias.

I have been standing there at ground zero a couple of times now, and I'm still asking myself what has become of this world and if it will ever stop.
A brillant book. Thank you for this Tal Bauer, though your book will haunt me and hold me captivated for long.
I had these feelings with just one book in the last years, when I read "a little life", and I rank "whisper" on the same level at least.

Meisterwerk!!!!

Ich hasse (LIEBE) dieses Buch. Es ist ein verdammtes Meisterwerk und ich habe so viel geheult, dass ich fast ausgetrocknet und zu einer Rosine mutiert wäre. Definitiv ist „Whisper“ sehr eng befreundet mit „A Little Life“ von Hanya Yanagihara, die kannste einfach zusammen gegen die nächste Wand klatschen, Help.
Und ja, „Whisper“ bekommt all meine Sterne, einen Platz bei meinen Lieblingsbüchern und zwischen die Seiten Geschreie und Buchdurchschüttler.
Ich bin so fertig mit dem Leben.

Es ist das erste Buch, welches ich von Tal Bauer gelesen (hier das Hörbuch gehört, aber die Paperback Variante ist schon auf dem Weg zu mir) habe und ich weiß nicht, ob es das richtige Buch war, um den Autor kennenzulernen. Vielleicht war es perfekt.
Tal Bauer hat mich so tief berührt, dass ich mich fast übergeben habe. Sein Schreibstil war liebevoll, grauenvoll direkt ... verachtenswert realistisch, magisch und voller Wunder, voller Glauben und Fanatismus und voller Krieg und Leid und Liebe und Leben und Hass, Hass, Hass. Sein Schreibstil war so unheimlich menschlich ...

Ich glaube, was mich am meisten berührt hat, war die Zeichnung von Glauben, der einem Kraft, Leben und uneingeschränkte Liebe gibt und Fanatismus, der einem all das nimmt und nur den Hass und die Zerstörung und den Tod hinterlässt.

Ich habe es geliebt, wie tief sich Tal Bauer in das Thema gekniet hat, wie viel recherchiert und irgendwie vielleicht auch mit dem Buch auf- und verarbeitet wurde. Dieses Buch zeigt so viele Schicksale und so viele Menschen ... im Mittelpunkt von alledem Kris und David, die durch eine Hölle gehen, wie viele von uns sie sich einfach nicht vorstellen können. Bauer erzählt von Zerrissenheit, Liebe, Traumata, Krieg, Tod und einem so starken Glauben, dass mir beinahe das Herz stehengeblieben ist.

John Solo, der das Hörbuch gesprochen hat, gehört nun offiziell zu meinen liebsten Sprechern. Er hat ... den Charakteren und ihren Geschichten so viel Leben eingehaucht, dass es sich angefühlt hat, als wäre ich mit dabei. Bei manchen Sprechern kommt nicht viel Emotion rüber und ich glaube, die hat John Solo ihnen einfach eiskalt geklaut. Solo hat geweint und geschrien, hat geflüstert und geweint ... ist an Worten erstickt und hat sie mit so viel Liebe gefüllt, dass ich mich auf dem Boden zusammengerollt habe.

Ich kann einfach noch nicht in Worte fassen, was dieses Buch mit mir angestellt hat ... was David und Kris in mir hinterlassen haben. Was Davids Glaube in mir hinterlassen hat.
Es tut weh und ich bin so dankbar.

Whisper is one of the most intense books I’ve ever read. The level of research Tal Bauer puts into his books is awe inspiring. Taking a tragic and horrific event like 9/11 and intertwining it in a top level suspense romance, takes not only guts but a specific kind of writing. And Bauer outdid himself with this one. The intensity, the story arc over 16 years and the sheer depth of this story is out of this world.
And John Solo did an absolutely amazing job with his narration! The accents, the voices, the emotions! I imagine it’s not easy giving voice to such a gut wrenching and expertly woven story, but he did it perfectly and captivated me from the first word.
