Mehr Philosophiebuch denn Techno-Thriller...
My German Review:
Der Klappentext könnte auch zu einem Michael Crichton-Roman passen - quasi "Congo" mit Kraken, doch gut die Hälfte des Buchs nehmen Charaktere in Anspruch, die nicht mal auf der Insel sind und mit der Prämisse (Kommunikationsversuch mit intelligenten Tintenfischen) nichts zu tun haben.
Dies ist ein Science Fiction-Thriller mit extrem starken philosophischen Einschüben über die Natur des (Mensch)Seins, Kommunikation, Einsamkeit und die Ausbeutung der Meere.
Vor allem in den ersten paar Stunden des Hörbuchs wirft der Autor mit leicht abgewandelten Begriffen um sich (Hex- statt Helikopter etc), um das futuristische Setting zu beschreiben. Zwar versteht man intuitiv, was da beschrieben wird, doch die Fülle an neuen Ausdrücken kann schon mal überfordern.
Hinzu kommt, dass der Autor sehr komplizierte Personen-Namen verwendet, die ich erst mal auf Amazon über die "Blick ins Buch"-Funktion nachschauen musste.
Die Sprecherin macht ihre Sache sehr gut, allerdings spricht sie die Eigennamen von Orten und Personen so aus, wie sie wohl nativ klingen, wechselt dann aber im selben Satz wieder ins reguläre Englisch.
Ein Buch zum Nachdenken, aber nicht zum schnell runterlesen. Eher Blade Runner als Terminator.
My English Review: More philosophy book than techno thriller...
The blurb could also fit a Michael Crichton novel - a sort of "Congo" with octopuses, but a good half of the book is taken up by characters who aren't even on the island and have nothing to do with the premise (attempt to communicate with intelligent octopuses).
This is a science fiction thriller with extremely strong philosophical overtones about the nature of being (human), communication, loneliness and the exploitation of the seas.
Especially in the first few hours of the audio book, the author throws around sligthly modified terms (hex- instead of helicopter, etc.) to describe the futuristic setting. Although one understands intuitively what is being described, the abundance of new expressions can be overwhelming at times.
In addition, the author uses very complicated personal names, which I first had to look up on Amazon using the "Look inside the book" function.
The narrator does her job very well, although she pronounces the proper names of places and people as they probably sound native, but then switches back to regular English in the same sentence.
A book to think about, but not a quick read. More Blade Runner than Terminator.
