Inhaltsangabe

Soon to be a Netflix original series!

"Wildly imaginative." (President Barack Obama on The Three-Body Problem trilogy)

This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author.

In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy. Only the human mind remains a secret. This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a daring plan that grants four men enormous resources to design secret strategies, hidden through deceit and misdirection from Earth and Trisolaris alike.

Three of the Wallfacers are influential statesmen and scientists, but the fourth is a total unknown. Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer and sociologist, is baffled by his new status. All he knows is that he's the one Wallfacer that Trisolaris wants dead.

Very interesting sociological concepts in a Sci-fi framework

This book discusses some very interesting sociological concepts and wraps it in a thrilling Sci-fi setting.
Great narration too.
Looking forward to more from Cixin Liu

Interspevies Tit-for-Tat x MAD

Makes international relations and realism much more attractive in this Sci-Fi perspective. Loved it.

Incredible, a modern JRR Tolkien

THIS is a MASTERPIECE.
I'm totally overwhelmed, having finished the book just today.
If you are looking for action, you're looking in the wrong place.
You should be able to recover from emotional shocks,
even be sure you are psychologically stable.
This is NOT a horror story, it even ends giving you hope,
but it also will NOT leave you untouched.

The predecessor "The Three-Body-Problem" was full of tension , lots of stories woven into one story line, this one is even more complex, highly intelligent, if not even visionary.

You will encounter:
philosophical and ethical discussions, politics, sociology, psychology, immense, dense, irritating
A real wonder egg of lots of stories.
A peek into a world not 300 years ago but 300 years in the future, where Cixin guides you through this roughly 3 decades, how mankind will evolve under certain circumstances.

Cixin leads you up to several climaxes, just to let you crash back to black "reality".

Sometimes I was able to anticipate what would happen next, what would be the outcome a the current story, and not only once Cixin caught me fully on the wrong foot

Interesting, tense.
You will live with a lot of protagonists, you will encounter the typical mankind shortsightedness and , in parallel, people who are real visionaries.
Three simple sentences and an Ant are the basis for this unbelievable good book.

A MUST, I think, in every library of every politician.

PS: I'd rather have Luke Daniels read this book for us.

this needs a BIG disclaimer and warning

rarely do i feel the need to write a "warning" review, but here we go:

this is the second book in a series, so i expect you to know already how mediocre of a read the first book was. it held together only by an interesting premise in the first half and the laying out of the life of the main character with all its hardships to give the reader a chance to make a judgement on that persons actions. not perfect, but still stimulating enough to not come away from it empty handed.

so far so good. here comes the follow up book...and immediately you realize that there won't be any relevant connection to the first book. with very few exceptions every character you know gets dropped immediately.

what follows then is...the first 1/3 of the book. this is one of the WORST things i have read, ever. if you think i'm exagerating, read 4-5 star reviews when they mention "problematic dream women" or "a slow start" or "irrelevant chapter to the book" or "this could have bean dealt with in 1 page".

it boggles the mind that instead of setting up an interesting premise like in the first book you would induldge in some childisch fan fiction a teenager would come up with of an imaginary girlfriend (this is not a spoiler, its immediately obviously stated as such) to start of a follow up book.
the paper thin payoff that follows from it evaporates immediately and never plays a big role again. this is a blunder of the highest order. this is drivel that would get you an F in every literary class.

so, what remains? why is this book praised then? well, here is the explanation:

- if you have no background in science nor scifi, you may find the final revelation interesting (title of the book). from 20h+ of audiobook that is a 20min conversation. thats alot of bad stuff to wade through to get 20min out of it. you have been warned.
thing is, nothing is new here, so if you ever watched a documentary or read scifi about aliens...you won't experience that revelation. also, it gets phoned in really hard, so if you are an experienced reader you will figure it out way too soon.

- if you think the younger generation and future humans can only be dumber than you and they wouldn't know how to bind their shoelaces without refering to their elders...WELCOME at home. rarely have i read a more condecending depiction of future humanity which culminates not only in supersticion and religious fanatism, but also disregard for safety, secrecy, duty or self preservation.
so if you hate humanity you will get some confirmation bias out of this book.

btw, the first book had plot holes the size of the universe already (like Alpha Centauri not being the three body system the author depicts, or quantum entaglement not allowing for communication...), so strap yourself in. its not getting better.
ppl who claim this is hard scifi...should be encouraged to actually watch some documentaries or read up on science, because THIS IS NOT IT. its sci-magic, and not of the good kind. some concepts are flat out ludicrous and should not have made it past proof reading.
1-2 interesting premises don't make up a good book series, sry to say.

by far not as good as the first book

unfortunately, this book is a little predictable and definitely has some lengths. As the story runs out of steam, the author has a hard time bringing it to the not very believable conclusion.

Hard to differentiate Characters

Unfortunately the narrator does not voice act much - often its hard to recognise the switching of speakers during conversations.
