Inhaltsangabe

This collection contains the first three Bureau novellas:

Corruption

Once a proud demon of the night sky who carried nightmares to humans, Tenrael has spent decades in captivity as the star attraction of a traveling carnival. He exists in miserable servitude to men who plunk down ten dollars to fulfill their dark desires.

Charles Grimes is half human, half...something else. For 15 years he’s worked for the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs, ridding the country of dangerous monsters. When his boss sends him to Kansas to chase a rumor about a captive demon, Charles figures it’s just another assignment. Until he meets Tenrael.

Clay White

Someone - or something - is murdering young men in San Francisco. Clay White has been fired from the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs, but he’s determined to track down the killer. When he comes across a vampire named Marek, Clay assumes he’s caught the perp. But the encounter with Marek turns out to be more complicated than Clay expected, and it forces him to deal with his own troubled past and murky psyche.

As Clay discovers, sometimes the truth doesn't come easy - and the monsters are not who we expect.

Creature

Alone in a cell and lacking memories of his past, John has no idea who - or what - he is. Alone on the streets of 1950s Los Angeles, Harry has far too many memories of his painful past and feels simply resignation in facing his empty future.

When Harry is given a chance to achieve his only dream - to become an agent with the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs - all he has to do is prove his worth. Yet nothing has ever come easy for him.

Now he must offer himself and John as bait, enticing a man who wants to conquer death. But first he and John must learn what distinguishes a monster from a man - and what a monster truly wants.

On my all time favourite short story list already!

I had been totally over the moon when I found out all 3 stories are in one audio book! Still I had been a bit apprehensive pressing the start button. I was worried, how my favourite characters would come out in the audible world.
Kim Fielding got me spellbound from the very first page of each of her three Bureau Short Stories. Her charactes are special and don't follow common scripts, while monsters are not always the villains and evil deeds are not reserved to them alone. Tenrael, the once abused nightmare demon, and Charles, the half-angel, are my most favourite couple. „Be my heart and soul, Charles, and I will be your wings“. John, the pitiful creature without a heart and Harry make my heart flood with warmth, too. Who is a monster? Seeing Harry treating John with affection and respect and John thriving because of that, makes you wonder.

Joel Leslie has done a stunning job bringing Charles,Clay, Harry and all the other charaters „alive“. Charles & Tenrael are marvellously interpreted and they sound like I had always imagined them. Nevertheless with story#1 I often felt the need for a „slow“ button. The development between those two men is so compressed and strong and there is so much left in the written form to the reader's imagination, that the audio book version somewhat felt like sitting in a race car, progessing faster than my head could catch up. Clay and his vampire come out strong and impressive in story #2. My absolute favourite is Mr. Leslie's interpretation of Harry & John in story #3. Both lonley men are filled with such gentle voices and make their slowly growing relationship feel so tender and desperate at the same time, that I am simply melting away like ice in the sun every time I listen to this part.

The Bureau world certainly is becoming more complex and Chief Townsend still remains a mystery to me despite of all his apperances. I can't wait what Mrs.Fielding has in store for us readers next, hopefully soon!
