Moving story, exquisite writing

I never expected a book about the death of a child to be so gripping and interesting! Of course it’s a sad and moving story, but the writing is exquisite. Even though the child in question, Hamnet, happens to be the son of William Shakespeare it is not The Bard who gets the central scene here. Instead, it is his family and their relationships that deserve the focus. His wife Agnes / Anne Hathaway is beautifully characterised, as is their relationship and strong bond.
The research into this novel and how Maggie O’Farrell managed to bring that era half a millennium ago to be so alive, so interesting, so relevant, is impressive. It shows that human nature is unchanging over centuries.

A tour de force

Ì loved this book. Beautifully written and beautifully read. This was my first full-length audio book and I found myself really savouring the language, far more than I would do on the written page. It succeeds admirably in portraying what life must have been like in Elizabethan England with the threat of sickness and death always lurking just round the corner, with horses the only mode of transport, the widespread illiteracy, the violence that marked many relationships. The plot is cleverly woven, telling two stories, of birth and death, until they eventually come together. It is also an exploration of grief and of how it is experienced differently by man and woman, driving them apart. The only thing I didn't understand was why Shakespeare called his play after his son, but that didn't detract from this brilliantly crafted story.

Un roman fascinant

Un style limpide et profond au service d'une histoire aussi romanesque que réaliste. On se trouve transporté dans un autre monde, dans une autre époque.
La narratrice en français Sara Basiani donne du sens aux mots les plus simples. Elle a une voix merveilleuse qui déroule ce récit avec une simplicité qui va droit au coeur.

Lovely, moving story, beautifully told

I love how the author avoids any mention of the S-word: Shakespeare. You know who it's about, but because she avoids the name, it's possible to forget from time to time and to just listen to the story as a story, without the prejudice of our own experiences with the Bard. And that makes the end of the story all the more powerful. Lovely read!
