The Summer I Held the Chisel is told by Daisy Ryals, a young girl who relates the accounts of one summer in her life. The majority of the names, places, and events are real. Conversations and sequence of events are created in order to make the audiobook an adventure instead of a nonfiction account. It is a story about a family during the Great Depression, working and living during a difficult time in America's history.

At a crossroads in his young life, Hank is gifted a Bible for Christmas with a special scripture engraved on the cover—chosen by his grandmother. Filled with curiosity and questions about the meaning behind the verse, Hank turns to his beloved grandfather, Puppy John, for guidance. What starts as a simple question turns into a profound journey, one that will lead Hank through life-changing lessons about faith, purpose, and the true meaning of God’s plan.
