A tiny ad in a local newspaper catches Cédric Sapin-Defour’s eye: a litter of Bernese Mountain Dog puppies need homes. A lonely, single, gym teacher and mountain climber in the French Alps, Cédric visits the dogs and immediately falls for a puppy with a blue collar who steps over his siblings to get to him. Named Ubac, French for the north side of the mountain – the rainy, cloudy slope – the puppy quickly upends Cédric’s life. They go on hikes together, taking to the hills and exploring, forging a bond that brings joy and a sense of fulfillment and adventure.

In 2015, climber and documentary maker Joe French was filming in the Himalaya when tragedy struck and he found himself caught in an earthquake that killed nearly 9,000 people. Miraculously, he survived—but this wasn't the first accident from which he was lucky enough to escape. On a previous expedition to the Himalayas, Joe's team of Sherpas had been wiped out by an avalanche. Back in Scotland, his wife Julie was fighting her own battle against cancer and, on his return, Joe found himself at home caring for their two young girls.

This story is about a man who had his feelings bottled up for way too long. Not able to tell his family why he did the things he did and not able to recoup the lost years away from the people who he loved. In the Mexican-American community, you never show your sadness, your pain, or weakness. As an act of pride, you always keep all your emotions to yourself like as if nothing is wrong. Showing everyone that you're not suffering and everything is fine is strength.
