Part 1 covers the New World before 1492, European discovery and contact with Native Americans, the first colonies of Spain, France, the Netherlands, and Britain, British colonial history including the Puritan colonies and the Chesapeake Bay colonies, the French and Indian War, the rise of slavery, the growing tension between the colonies and the British government, the American Revolution, the Articles of Confederation, American Constitutional government, the early Republic, the rise of political parties, Jeffersonian Republicanism, and the War of 1812.

In October of 1933 a plane carrying seven people exploded and crashed over Chesterton, Indiana, on its way to Chicago, killing all on board. The crash shocked the small community of Chesterton, but what really shocked the country was the revelation that it was a bomb that brought the plane down. The airline industry was new, and the news of a bomb was potentially disastrous to an industry still trying to prove itself safe to a skeptical public.

These Chronicles could have been authored by Thomas Jefferson had he been so inclined to do so. He and Captain Meriwether Lewis spent long nights tracing its daily record of "Courses and Distances" onto brown paper on the floor of the East Wing of the White House. After Lewis's untimely death, Jefferson instead relegated the job to Captain William Clark. As a result, the narrative of the expedition has, until now, never been told as Captain Meriwether Lewis intended it to be.
