Filmmaking is planning. A LOT of planning. Before you can roll a camera or bring your first crew member on board, there’s an enormous amount of pre-production work that has to happen. For us, that meant creating loglines, one-sheets, and location breakdowns to get a handle on logistics and scope. It’s a lot to manage, and while we’re lucky to have a four-person filmmaking team tackling it from every angle, not everyone has that kind of support system.

That’s where Alex D. Lugo and his platform FilmPro.ai come in. We’re going to sit down with Alex and talk all things film pre-production, and dig into what steps he sees as most important to getting a movie ready before the director yells action.

Alex D. Lugo is an award-winning actor, filmmaker, software engineer, and the Co-founder/CEO of FilmPro - a software platform that helps filmmakers simplify pre-production. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Miami, Alex’s work is enriched by his multicultural roots and artistic heritage as the son of Daniel Lugo, an iconic Latin American film and television actor. He is an alumni of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and the founder of the production company Vitruvian Films. On the tech side, Alex began his career as a software engineer at Goldman Sachs before joining Square, where he led several initiatives to integrate AI into their onboarding process. Today, through his work at FilmPro, he is reimagining the future of filmmaking by building tools that empower the next generation of storytellers.

Pre-Production organization on a feature film can be overwhelming. Spreadsheets. Calendars. To-do lists. There are so many things to organize and so many people to coordinate that it's easy to see why making a movie is so incredibly difficult. Enter into the picture an up-and-coming production workflow website called Collabrix that aims to help organize all your information and collaborate with the whole team. Thomas DeCarlo is a filmmaker-entrepreneur who is currently developing his first animated feature through his studio in southern Indiana. Adapted from his multi-award-winning short film, the feature is pioneering a new class of ultra-small independent animation with Thomas as the film’s writer, director, producer, and primary 3D artist. Thomas is also the Founder and CEO of Collabrix, a virtual collaboration platform that is redefining workflow efficiency for decentralized creative teams. Developed in partnership with his studio, Thomas is leveraging the technology to achieve world-class animation with indie-scale resources.

Nick & Kerry!

Married filmmaking duo, KERRY CARLOCK & NICK LUND-ULRICH, work together to create genre-bending, character-driven stories. Their debut feature, Armstrong, was a micro-budget superhero drama starring Vicky Jeudy (Orange is the New Black), which was distributed domestically by Screen Media and Amazon Prime. Both Armstrong and their new film, Suffer, are proud recipients of the ReFrame Stamp, sponsored by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute. The honor is a “mark of distinction for projects that have demonstrated success in gender-balanced film.” Separately, their careers have focused on various parts of production. Kerry served as the SVP of Programming for Pie Town Productions for five years and has been on the producing team of over twenty-five primetime series. Nick is a VFX artist and supervisor who owned his own company, which specialized in environments and compositing for supporting VFX on studio features and independent productions. He won a Visual Effects Society Award and an Emmy for HBO’s The Pacific.

We are excited to have budding filmmaker Patrick Curran join us to discuss his recent adventures in filmmaking! He is currently in pre-production to direct his first feature film, and we have a ton of questions for him, especially about collaborating with his cinematographer. What to look for in a director of photography (DP) and how to find the ideal creative partner for your film? Drawing from his experiences as a director, writer, and actor, Patrick shares insights on the collaboration that makes great movie-making possible. PATRICK CURRAN:

A native of Newtown, CT, Patrick is an award-winning writer, director, producer, and actor and has been working in independent film for over 15 years. His short film Snowbird (2025) won Best Comedy Short at both Woods Hole and Block Island Film Festival, Best Narrative Short at Twelve Lions, and Best International Film at Louth International. His next project Golden and Gone, a spec feature, won Best Screenplay at the 15th LA Comedy Festival Screenplay Competition and is in active development.

Patrick produced the award-winning web series Keeping Up with the Downs (in which he also co-wrote and co-starred).

Patrick also works as an actor, most notably as a principal in more than 75 national commercial campaigns. He's a member of SAG/AFTRA and AEA and graduated as a music theatre major from The Catholic University of America. and The London Dramatic Academy (UK).

Patrick lives in Los Angeles.
