Episode 44 - The European road continues

This week, we reflect on Shamrock Rovers' dramatic 2-1 victory over Ararat-Armenia in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round second leg. Despite the win on the night, Rovers fell 3-2 on aggregate, bringing their Champions League campaign to an end. We break down the performance, discuss where the tie was ultimately lost, and assess what the result means as the Hoops drop into the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, where Albanian champions KF Egnatia await.

We also discuss the signing of Will Fitzgerald, who was officially unveiled before kick-off in Tallaght. What does the former Drogheda United winger bring to Stephen Bradley's squad, where could he fit into the team, and could there be more business to come before the transfer window closes?

Finally, we look ahead to Friday night's League of Ireland clash away to Drogheda United. After a physically and emotionally demanding European night, how much rotation should Rovers make? What threats do Drogheda pose, and how important is it for Rovers to quickly refocus on domestic matters?

As always, thank you for listening and supporting The Milltown Way.

  • Cup progress & European focus
    Jul 18 2026

    Episode 43 -

We begin by looking back at Rovers' dramatic 4-1 extra-time victory over Cork City in the FAI Cup second round. John McGovern stole the headlines with a stunning impact off the bench, scoring twice and providing an assist to help the holders book their place in the next round. We break down the game, discuss the key tactical moments, and look at the performances that made the difference on another memorable night at Tallaght Stadium.

Next, we turn our attention to Roberto Lopes, after it was confirmed that a civic reception will be held in his honour at 2pm on Saturday, 26 July, at Eamonn Ceannt Park, Lourdes Celtic. Following his remarkable FIFA World Cup campaign with Cape Verde, we discuss why this recognition is so richly deserved and what it says about one of Shamrock Rovers' modern greats.

Finally, we look ahead to another huge European challenge as Rovers travel to face Ararat-Armenia in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie. We examine the Armenian side, their strengths, key players, recent form, and discuss what Stephen Bradley's men will need to do to bring a positive result back to Tallaght ahead of the return leg.
