If Susie (Briney) Hogart-Harrington was born 10 years later, we would all probably know her name from her prowess in the athletic arena. She was just good at everything she did.

Unfortunately, Susie came along before Title IX, the 1972 landmark civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal funds.

Susie graduated from Butte Central in 1973, and girls’ sports were an afterthought, to say the least. But Susie kept playing.

She went to Eastern Montana College, which is now called MSU-Billings, and competed in volleyball, basketball and track & field for the Yellowjackets. She was particularly good in the javelin. She launched the javelin 152 feet, which was 2 feet better than the Olympic qualifier at the time.

However, Susie could not get the sponsorship needed to pursue a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. So, she said she breathed a sigh of relief when the United States boycotted the Moscow Games in 1980. It just might have saved her from a lifetime of regret.

While Susie did not get the attention or notoriety she deserved, her daughters sure did. Thanks to pioneers like Susie, girls’ sports were a big deal by the time her three girls, Jackie, J.J. and Jodi came along to star for Butte Central.

Susie was there to coach them in every sport in which they competed. She even coached Butte Central’s volleyball team for four years.

Today, girls’ sports are as popular as ever. Little girls grow up dreaming of being the next Caitlin Clark. That is because of women like Susie. They never believed they were lesser athletes. They just kept playing.

Two weeks ago, I brought you the story of Shawn Wetzel allegedly being attacked by a woman at the Santa Slammer youth basketball tournament at Memorial Gym in Anaconda.

Wetz was working as an official at the time.

The story blew up, and nearly everyone took Wetzel’s side. He is a likable guy from a famous Montana family. She is now disliked, known only by her alleged actions that were caught on security cameras.

In the column, I pointed out that Wetzel was told he could not serve as a volunteer assistant coach in the Butte High boys’ basketball program in the week following the incident. The incident happened on Dec. 6, and Butte High played its first game Dec. 13 in Bozeman.

I did not write that to take a shot at the district. I did not know then — and I still don’t know — if that is the reason he was dismissed. I just thought it was worth noting because so many people were asking me why Wetzel was no longer on the Bulldog bench.

Wetzel said he was not given a reason, but the time is suspect.

We do not know if the attack was the reason he is not allowed to do the job he did the last several seasons because the school district is not answering questions. In doing so, they are making a bad situation worse and more confusing.

But by opening about the incident that left him feeling hurt and embarrassed, Wetzel has given us a silver lining to the story, and maybe youth officials will be the ones who benefit.

The Bears beat the Packers in the playoffs Saturday night. As a life-long, lunatic Bears it was a game that I could not miss, even if it was my daughter’s 16th birthday.

Now I’m in the doghouse for something that I could not control.

Russell Cleveland is a father, small business owner, rancher and Navy veteran who is running for Montana’s first congressional seat.

On top of all that, Russ is a former Montana Tech football player who is the defensive coordinator for the high school football team in St. Regis. Last fall, Russ helped lead the Tigers as they advanced to the second round of the Montana Class C 8-player playoffs.

He was the first candidate to announce in what is becoming a crowded field of Democratic hopefuls looking to unseat incumbent Republican Ryan Zinke. Since last April, Russ has been traveling the western half of the state to have important conversations with Montanans.

Russ is running a true grassroots campaign. He is refusing to accept dark money and money from political action committees. He is talking to the people about important issues, like fixing healthcare, improving affordability and ending corruption.

Aaron Woliczko served as the head coach of the Montana Tech’s men’s basketball team from 2010 through 2013. He had the program clearly pointed in the right direction when he and his family decided to move back to California.

Not long after that, Coach Woliczko started what has to be considered a dream job with the West Coast Conference. He is currently the senior associate commissioner for men’s basketball and sports administration.

In that job, he gets to rub elbows with some of the best coaches in the world. He has attended multiple Final Fours as part of his job, getting to sit in the good seats with the other “suits.”

Before he got into coaching, Woliczko was a three-sport athlete at Santa Cruz High School in California. He played basketball in junior college before taking his talent to the University of the Pacific, where he helped the Tigers win back-to-back Big West Conference titles.

Wolcizko’s Tigers went 24-6 and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1997. That team was inducted into the Pacific Athletic Hall of Fame.

As a senior in 1998, Woliczko and the Tigers went 23-10. He played most of the season with a broken hand. He also shared the court with teammate Michael Olowokandi, who was drafted with the first pick of the 1998 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers.

Today, Coach Woliczko is not the most famous athlete in his family. That would be his daughter, McKenna. She is a senior basketball and softball star at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Bruno, California. She is also a five-star basketball recruit who recently committed to play for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Aaron and his wife Erika also have a son, James, who was born after the family moved back to California. Look for big things to come from him someday, too.

Cadence Graham did not want to move to Butte. It was hard to blame her, either.

She was about to be an eighth grader in Belt. She was looking forward to continuing school and sports with her friends.

But Montana Tech hired her father, Jeff, to coach the women’s basketball team, and the family moved to the Mining City in the summer of 2022. It turned out to be a very good move for Montana Tech, Cadence Graham and the Butte High Bulldogs.

Cadence started playing basketball for the Bulldogs as an eighth grader at East Middle School. She split time between junior varsity and varsity before taking a larger role with the varsity team. She then led the team in scoring in a win over Butte Central.

Last Friday, Cadence became just the second Butte High girl to join the 1,000-point club. She also runs track for the Bulldogs, and she plays libero on the Bulldog volleyball team.

Since she is just a junior, Bulldog fans still have a lot more time to watch Cadence as she tries to help lead the Bulldog basketball team back to the Class AA State tournament. She also has time to make a run at Lexi Nelson’s school record of 1,696 points.

Shawn Wetzel is the unofficial “Mayor of Montana.” The super-chill 6-foot-8 Wetzel loves everyone he has ever met, and those feelings are mostly mutual.

That is why it was shocking that a youth basketball mom attacked Wetz at the Santa Slammer last month in Anaconda.

Mitch Verlanic was an All-State safety for the Butte High Bulldogs this past football season. Last week, he was picked to play for the West Side in the 2026 Montana East-West Shrine Game in Butte.

He would be a steal if a college team took a chance on him, but so far, the coaches have not been calling. Montana Western did, but Mitch plans to be an engineer.

I’ve been watching Butte High football for a long time. I watched as a fan, as a writer and as a parent. Mitch is one of the best defensive players I have seen play for the Bulldogs. He isn’t going to wow you with his size on the roster, but he is ever bit as big as Colt Anderson.

This past season, Mitch unleashed the fury for the Bulldogs, chalking up 104 total tackles. That includes 77 solo tackles. He just has a nose for the ball. He is super smart, as is evident with his 4.0 GPA and 31 on the ACT.

He also works harder than most. He did not miss one morning weights workout in his four years playing football for the Bulldogs.

After two seasons not playing hoops, Mitch returned to the Butte High basketball team this season. He and classmate Cayde Stajcar were heavily recruited by teammate Hudson Luedtke, and so far the Bulldogs are undefeated.

Hopefully the college coaches come around, too. With his combination of ability, smarts and instinct, I would bet anything that he will be a star at the next level if he is given a chance.
