    Jun 16 2026
Tax deductions for car and travel expenses represent one of the largest claim categories, with Australians claiming approximately $10.6 billion or $2,500 per person in recent years. The Australian Taxation Office closely monitors this category and has issued specific guidance: home-to-work commutes are not deductible, estimated travel kilometres must be supported by records that align with occupation type, and expenses already reimbursed by employers cannot be claimed. Financial expert Matt Bowens from ING provides guidance on maximising legitimate deductions while avoiding common mistakes that trigger ATO scrutiny.

  • Kyle Sandilands settles with ARN for $15 million
    Jun 16 2026
Radio broadcaster Kyle Sandilands has reached a $15 million legal settlement with his former employer ARN Media, to be paid in three instalments of $5 million over three years. Sandilands was stood down by ARN earlier this year following an on-air dispute with co-host Jackie O, and had originally sought $85 million from his $100 million contract. The settlement allows Sandilands to become a free agent and potentially launch a subscription-based podcast, while Jackie O continues to pursue her separate legal case against the network.

  • Baby stolen in car sparks Townsville crime debate
    Jun 16 2026
A two-month-old baby was stolen inside a car during a theft in Townsville, Queensland, with the alleged offenders telling the mother 'we're bad guys' when returning the infant. Seven cars were recovered and ten people arrested, including a 14-year-old girl, with at least one suspect released from detention on a supervision order prior to the incident. Federal MP Philip Thompson is demanding tougher penalties and calling for repeat youth offenders to face imprisonment regardless of age.
