  • Sourcerer ⦿ Alice Black | Curating The Creative Resonance Of An Artist's Throughline
    Jan 21 2024

    Welcome to Sourcerer ⦿
In this second batch of our long form Echologues, we are tuning into the open sourcery of iconoclastic and pioneering contemporary curators. People whose job it is each day to tune into their creative radar and cultural pulse and elevate artists and celebrate their work.

In this Echologue we talk to Alice Black who was the director and curator of leading contemporary design and innovation space the London  Design Museum - involved in its curation transformation from niche London museum to major international design force in an award winning new building in Kensington.

We talk to Alice as how you in the curatorial process and selection of a major cultural institution like the Design Museum you get to properly tune into the creative resonance of the artist's body of work in order to refine and focus on particular aspects of it. How in this process you are also actively in the process of contextually reframing that work. We also explore how this curational signal boost can potentially change the trajectory of an artist's work and profile going forward.

We then explore ArtULTRA - the accelerator for early career artists that Alice now runs and curates.  ArtULTRA was created out of the desire to provide support for a diverse range of artists at a time of great need. As a piece of blue sky thinking by Alice Black during the first lockdown in 2020, when reflecting on the impact of the Covid crisis on the Arts.

ArtULTRA has evolved form that need to now support the development of emerging artists and artistic projects in order to create a more diverse and vibrant art world. ArtULTRA provides curatorial services, commissions artworks on behalf of clients, sells art, filters and increases digital outreach and works with artists to enable them develop resilience and sustainable careers.

  • Sourcerer ⦿ Kostas Papakostas | Taming The Noise Inside The Silence
    Dec 8 2023

    Welcome to Sourcerer ⦿
In this first batch of our long form Echologues, we are tuning into the open sourcery of iconoclastic and pioneering contemporary artists.

In this latest Echologue we are delighted to be able to talk to Kostas Papakostas about his journey from graduating from art school, into then stepping into the world of communication agencies, which then saw him working on some of the biggest brand campaigns in the world.

We then follow him to his creative epiphany at an artist’s retreat in a remote village up a Bulgarian mountain, which spurred him to commence painting again and start to reclaim his self and inner space as a practicing visual artist. A shift which led to setting up his own successful studio in East London culminating in the opening of his first major solo show in Seoul for one month.

It’s a rare and intimate chance to listen to a very personal arc of a creative’s emerging journey and evolving artistic practice. To lean in as a new identity and sense of creative self knocks at the door again and starts to authentically re-emerge, gather flux and reclaim resonant momentum.

    ⦿

Kostas’ work has been shown in several art festivals and exhibitions including: MTAC2001, California, USA; The Place, London, UK; IKON Gallery, Birmingham, UK; Moving Pictures Festival, Toronto, Canada; SK Foundation, Cologne, Germany and Minimalen festival, Trodheim, Norway; 6th International Video Poetry Festival, Athens, Greece; SeeMeOn 29, Sofia, Bulgaria, NOVA Art Space, Sofia, Bulgaria, Les Rencontres, Arles, France and KURA Gallery, Itoshima, Japan.

  • Sourcerer ⦿ Vlad Tenu | Computing The Architecture of Matter
    Dec 8 2023

    Welcome to Sourcerer ⦿
In this first batch of our long form Echologues, we are tuning into the open sourcery of iconoclastic and pioneering contemporary artists.

In this Echologue we talk to Vlad Tenu. An architect operating at the intersection of Design, Art, Fashion & Technology. Where the nature of form computes and interplays with the form of nature.

It’s an Echologue that continually pulls on a subtle but emerging thread of the gradual creep of AI into design and creative practice and how the arrival of this new artificial intelligence doesn’t need to forgo the coherence of inherent natural intelligence.

We discuss his journey from taking a computer science course at school to Bjork wearing the FORÆVA dress.

  • Sourcerer ⦿ Ella Spira | The Frequency Of A Creative Nomad
    Dec 8 2023

    Welcome to Sourcerer ⦿
In this first batch of our long form Echologues, we are tuning into the open sourcery of iconoclastic and pioneering contemporary artists.

In this Echologue we talk to multidisciplinary artist and co-founder of Sister’s Grimm Ella Spira MBE and exploring her unique process and evolving role with long time collaborator Pietra Mello-Pittman MBE. Both in designing and creating their award winning work and then curating it across the world.

We explore that liminal and transformative moment when work is on site and in situ they both realise ‘this production is going to work’. That moment where it will cross the private threshold, to now take on a life in the public sphere and imaginative realm of the localised audience.

Finally, we explore the phenomenon that wherever they are in the world, despite being geographically dispersed and no matter the native language of the piece, the audience seems to embody and react consistently to the same dynamic fundamentals of the work and in doing so are seemingly tuning into a common frequency for its creative resonance.
