This is Silent Killers a new podcast series from Face2Face and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.

In 1997, the world came together to say no more, to landmines, to war’s forgotten victims, and to the silent threat buried beneath the feet of millions. The result was the Mine Ban Treaty, a landmark moment in international humanitarian law.

But today, that threat is far from over.

From Cambodia to Ukraine, from Afghanistan to Angola. Landmines still claim lives, shatter communities, and prevent peace from taking root.

In this series, we go behind the headlines. We hear from survivors, activists, policymakers, and frontline deminers and voices of courage, resilience, and change.

We explore the legacy of the Ottawa Treaty… the hard lessons learned… and the path ahead to a mine-free world.

Because the fight isn't finished.

And until every mine is cleared — no one is truly safe.

This is Silent Killers.

  • Humanitarian Law in a Shifting Security Landscape
    Feb 4 2026

Join in this conversation with David Peck and Peter Herby as they delve into the complexities of disarmament, particularly focusing on anti-personnel landmines and the humanitarian implications of their use. They discuss the importance of personal narratives in advocating for change, the challenges faced in diplomatic efforts and the moral and ethical considerations surrounding warfare. They emphasize the need for continued advocacy and the hope that exists within the disarmament community, despite the obstacles. Lean in and check it out.

Peter Herby is currently an Arms Adviser for the Norwegian Red Cross, working to mobilize the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement on humanitarian based arms issues.

Previously he was head of the Arms Unit in the Legal Division of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from 1997 until 2012 and represented the ICRC in all arms-related negotiations between 1994 and 2012. In this capacity he led work at the ICRC in 2010 and 2012 to reframe the question of nuclear weapons as primarily being a humanitarian, ethical and international humanitarian law issue and to build support for this approach within the broader International Movement of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

Since 2012, as head of “Petersburg Partnerships” a consultancy on humanitarian-based approaches to arms control and disarmament, Herby has provided expert support on humanitarian-based arms control and disarmament issues for the Norwegian Red Cross, ICRC, UNIDIR, Geneva Center for Security Policy, Geneva Center for Humanitarian Demining and several non-governmental organizations.

  • The Mine Ban Treaty: A Focus on the Arab Region
    Nov 24 2025

In this episode of Face2Face, we sit down with humanitarian leader Ayman Sorour for a deeply personal and quietly powerful conversation. Ayman reflects on the moments of tragedy he’s witnessed in the field, the losses that stay with you, and the unexpected ways individual acts—small, steady, imperfect—can bend the world toward something better. Together, we explore how impact is built one choice at a time, and why every gesture of care matters more than we think.

Ayman Sorour is founding executive director of Protection Against Armaments and Consequences, a NGO that works on humanitarian disarmament in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) including landmines, cluster munitions, human rights, killer robots, the convention on conventional weapons (CCW).

He has been conducting research for the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines-Cluster Munition Coalition (ICBL-CMC) on the MENA region since 2000. Sorour wrote and contributed to many publications on law, human rights, landmines, and cluster munitions since 1995. He’s a board member of the governing board of the ICBL-CMC and the African Center for Democracy and Human Rights Studies in Banjul, the Gambia. Sorour holds a BA in Law from Cairo University, human rights diploma from the International Institute for Human Rights (Strasbourg, France), senior mine action managers training from James Madison University (USA).

He speaks Arabic, English, and French.
