If you’ve ever thought, “Is it just me?” it isn’t. Ellie and Layla here. A mum and daughter podcast version of your group chat. We take everyday situations, overthink them and say them out loud, so you leave knowing it’s not just you. Two generations. Scarily similar opinions. No pretending If it’s awkward, we’re discussing it. If it’s controversial, we’ve got thoughts. If it's entirely random, even better. And yes, we love a conspiracy theory. Probably too much. So, if you've ever thought, 'Is it just me?', it isn't, and you'll fit right in. New episodes are released every other Tuesday.Layla and Ellie | It’s not just you Sozialwissenschaften
  • "Let me know if you need anything" and other traps that ruin your day
    Feb 17 2026

It was Random Acts of Kindness Day, so obviously we had to ruin it by unpacking the most dangerous sentence in the English language: “Let me know if you need anything”.

Because being nice is lovely. Until it costs you.

We get into the unspoken rules nobody agreed on, but everyone somehow follows:

    1. “Pop in for five minutes” turning into 3 hours
    2. Offering someone a lift, then sitting in traffic full of regret
    3. Saying “let me know if you need anything” and praying they never do
    4. Lending someone something and never seeing it again (including the outrage of spotting your own dish at someone else’s dinner)
    5. The weird rage of holding a door for someone who moves like a sloth
    6. “Help” that’s meant well, but feels mildly insulting
    7. Why women cannot take a compliment without adding a disclaimer

If you have ever been nice and immediately thought “never again”, you will get it.

  • Quicksand, Bloody Mary and Other Childhood Terrors That Ruined Our Sleep
    Feb 3 2026

This week, Layla and Ellie get into the unhinged category of fear: the stuff that absolutely owned us as kids and still has a grip on us now. From the Bermuda Triangle and quicksand panic, to Bloody Mary at sleepovers (absolutely not saying it again, thanks), we unpack the weird little myths that made bedtime feel like a hostage situation.

It starts innocent and nostalgic and then quickly escalates into ghost ships, “haunted” hills, shadow figures aka The Peeping Man, ghosts and the exact moment a mouse rescue turned into an emotional crisis. There is also an unexpected detour into childhood power trips, sibling menace behaviour, and the film scene that made Ellie scared to use the toilet for longer than anyone should admit (and gave many young women a water infection).

If you love the “why were we like this” conversations, mixed with real mum and daughter chaos, this one’s for you. Light-hearted but slightly grim in places.

  • Misogyny in Schools? Can You Spot It in an 8-Year-Old?
    Jan 20 2026

This week, we started with one question and somehow ended up in pigeon-related financial trauma and the Beckham family group chat from hell.

We’re talking about the push to train teachers to spot misogyny in schools, and asking the obvious question: what is a teacher even meant to be looking for in an eight-year-old? Is it misogyny, sexism, or just kids being annoying little weirdos?

From “girls can’t be superheroes” to “refusing to share Lego”, we try to work out where the line is, whether labelling kids too early helps anyone, and why it sometimes feels like we’re warning boys about becoming bad men instead of actually teaching them how to be strong, capable ones.

Then we take a sharp but short turn into viral culture chaos with the Brooklyn Beckham drama, the language being used, why the woman always gets blamed, and why the press backing someone today means absolutely nothing tomorrow.

Swearing, blunt opinions, and dry laughs included. As always.

    • Misogyny vs sexism, and why it gets messy fast

    • Can teachers realistically spot misogyny in primary school kids?

    • “Is this misogyny or just being eight?” (Lego, superheroes, “girls smell”)

    • What we should actually be teaching boys (responsibility, resilience, capability)

    • The comeback debate: polite responses vs “f off, you loser”

    • Brooklyn Beckham, Nicola Peltz, Victoria and David Beckham, and why nobody ever knows the truth

    • The media cycle and why women always take the hit first

We briefly reference sexual violence in the context of a past public awareness advert.

Follow the podcast, leave a rating, and send this to someone who loves a debate but hates nonsense.
