Good morning, this is your Saturday surf zone forecast for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, brought to you by the National Weather Service in San Juan.

Let's start with the northern beaches. San Juan and vicinity is looking pretty classic for early May. We're expecting around four feet of surf today with mostly sunny skies and scattered showers. East winds will be light at around ten miles per hour, and there's a moderate rip current risk, so swimmers should use caution. Sunday follows the same pattern with four-foot waves and isolated showers, though the winds will shift slightly southeast.

Over in the northeast around Rio Grande and Luquillo, conditions are nearly identical today with four-foot surf and moderate rip currents. The main difference comes Sunday when we'll see scattered showers increase a bit. By Monday, expect four-foot waves but notably more shower activity across that region.

The north central beaches from Arecibo to Dorado will see similar four-foot conditions both today and Sunday, though winds will be notably lighter at just five to ten miles per hour. It stays mostly sunny with isolated showers and moderate rip currents throughout the weekend.

Moving to the northwest around Aguadilla and Isabela, we've got something a bit different. Today starts sunny but clouds build in around midday with numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms possible. That's the most active weather we're forecasting for the entire region. Four-foot waves and moderate rip currents stay on the menu. Sunday calms down with mostly sunny skies returning and scattered showers replacing the heavy rain threat.

The west side tells an interesting story. Mayaguez and vicinity shows four-foot surf today with a moderate rip current risk, but by Sunday that rip current risk drops to low as surf diminishes to three feet. The southwest beaches at Cabo Rojo are already showing lower three-foot surf with low rip current risk and light winds at ten to fifteen miles per hour. Those conditions stay pretty consistent through the week.

The south side beaches are looking downright mellow. Both Ponce and the southeast around Arroyo are showing three-foot surf with low rip current risk today and Sunday. East winds will be light, generally five to ten miles per hour, making these some of the calmest conditions across our forecast area.

Now let's talk about the islands. Culebra stands out as our most active spot with five-foot surf today, the highest in the region, along with scattered showers and moderate rip currents with stronger east winds at fifteen miles per hour. Vieques will be more subdued at three feet with low rip current risk.

The U.S. Virgin Islands are showing moderate rip current risks with four-foot surf for both St. Thomas and St. Croix today and Sunday. Winds will be a bit stiffer around fifteen miles per hour or more, so plan accordingly if you're heading that direction.

Looking ahead to next week, Tuesday shows the most significant change. Surf heights will drop to three feet across most of the forecast area, and rip current risks remain low to moderate. Wednesday brings a slight rebound to four feet in many spots with mostly sunny skies dominating. Shower activity will generally stay isolated to scattered throughout the week, so rain shouldn't keep you from enjoying the water.

Bottom line for your weekend: moderate rip current risks are in effect across most of the northern coast and islands, so always be aware of your surroundings when entering the water. Head to the northwest if you want to see the most dramatic weather today, and the southwest and south side offer the calmest, most manageable conditions. Whether you're catching waves or just wading in, keep an eye on those rips, especially near jetties and reefs where they intensify.
