Valeria Racu of El Sindicato de Inquilinas de Madrid joins us to discuss the history of the housing struggle in Spain and the revolutionary potential of organising tenants.
The Madrid Tenant’s Union was the first of its kind when it was established in 2017. Since then it has grown in size and impact, winning major victories such as that against the giant private equity firm, Blackstone.
We speak about the unique legacy of Spain’s homeownership model in the wake of the 2008 financial crash, the generational wealth gap locking the young out of the property market, and the surprising advantage this can offer the left in a moment of low labour union density.
