• Measuring brain chemistry with nanosensors to advance mental health
    Oct 11 2023

Markita Landry, CZ Biohub SF Investigator and professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at UC Berkeley, is developing nanosensors to measure brain chemistry, such as concentrations of neurotransmitters like dopamine and oxytocin. Her aim is to modernize psychiatric treatments: what if depression could be diagnosed with a medical test instead of a questionnaire?

In this conversation with Biohub SF President Joe DeRisi, Landry also talks about her latest preprint, in which she and collaborators developed nanosensors made of carbon nanotubes to monitor the release of oxytocin in brain tissues from mice.

  • After 18 years without speaking, science gives stroke patient a voice
    Oct 11 2023

Edward Chang, a UCSF neurosurgeon and CZ Biohub SF Investigator, talks about his AI-powered breakthrough brain implant, enabling a stroke survivor to speak for the first time in 18 years. Combined with a personalized digital avatar, the system is the first in which either speech or facial expressions have been synthesized from brain signals.

In convo with CZ Biohub San Francisco President Joe DeRisi on August 30, 2023.

  • AI & the future of image analysis: a dialogue between scientist & #ChatGPT
    Oct 5 2023

Loic Royer is a CZ Biohub San Francisco scientist and creator of #OmegaAgent. In this conversation with Biohub SF President Joe DeRisi, Royer discusses how advances in AI and imaging technologies will transform image analysis in biology.

Royer concludes: “We’re clearly at a transformative time in science. These systems have passed the Turing test. Everybody should think about how to jump on the bandwagon.”

  • Could a virus cause Alzheimer's? Lead author on new preprint explains
    Oct 5 2023

A new analysis posted on medRxiv presents evidence that the shingles vaccine could prevent many cases of Alzheimer’s. The study, led by CZ Biohub SF Investigator Pascal Geldsetzer of Stanford University, leverages “natural randomization” in a UK vaccine program. Biohub SF President Joe DeRisi interviewed Geldsetzer on this study on May 26, 2023.
