Chapter Twelve of SEETHINGS III is a masterclass in duality—Mitchell’s serene domestic mask versus the monstrous truth beneath it. The morning after he murders Sandra, news of her body being found plays quietly on television. Mitchell, unfazed, butters his toast with Vegemite while his wife, Sam, reads the paper only metres away. The police have already taken Sandra’s estranged husband in for questioning, and Mitchell knows he’ll quickly be cleared. The evidence will never lead back to him.
Sam suggests a peaceful day at the beach, blissfully unaware she’s spending the morning with a killer. Their marital dynamic resurfaces—Sam’s defensiveness about sex, Mitchell’s smooth deflection—but he’s unusually relaxed. Sandra’s death has given him a twisted sense of satisfaction.
What follows is one of the most unsettling sequences in the book: Sam, for the first time in their marriage, suggests visiting the marina, drinking wine, reminiscing, even stepping aboard their yacht. Mitchell plays the doting husband, knowing every moment brings him closer to fulfilling a darker plan.
