  • How Friedrich Helps Jo To Become A Writer (Chapter Friend With Christina Scott)
    Aug 14 2025
In Little Women, before Jo goes to New York, she publishes her first novel, which becomes a complete flop. This has never been adapted. After Jo has published her first, flop novel, she says to herself that she wishes she would have an "unbiased" person to help her with her writings. Another moment in Little Women, where we can see that Louisa May Alcott planned Friedrich's character very early on to be both Jo's love interest and the person who helps her to reach her full potential as a writer.

  • Jo and Friedrich Enter The Symposium (Chapter Friend) With Christina Scott
    Jun 22 2023
You can't believe how many Little Women fans I know and who have told me that the "Symposium" is their favorite part in Little Women! and guess what Symposium has never been adapted (not fully anyway). Christina and I of course love the symposium and were are here to talk about it. In Little Women, chapter "Friend" Jo enters a symposium with Friedrich. There is a philosophical debate about religion which agitates Jo a great deal but Friedrich becames her guiding light.

I swear to you, this has always been the moment in the book where I personally believe that Jo began to fall in love with him, even if she didn't realize it herself yet.

Join us to analyze this breathtakingly beautiful chapter.

  • Jo March, Sensational Writer, Underpaid and Disposable (Chapter "Friend" With Christina Scott)
    Jun 9 2023
One of the things that never stops bothering me regarding Little Women, is the constant misrepresentation of chapter "Friend". In this chapter Jo is staying in New York and she is working for a sensational magazine called "Weekly Volcano". There are people who say that this makes Jo a "feminist" and that Friedrich is a "horrible person" because he doesn't like sensational stories. Nothing could be further from the truth. In the chapter, Jo calls these sensational stories "trash". She doesn't get a long with the editor who calls Jo a "disposable hack" and to top of this all Jo begins to get panic attacks caused by the stories she is writing. She is also being paid under minimum weight. People who hate Friedrich in this chapter should get their head checked, and also the name of the chapter is "Friend" for a reason.

  • Jo March and Sensational Writing (Chapter Friend With Christina Scott)
    May 25 2023
Chapter Friend is one of the most misadapted chapters in Little Women. This is the chapter where Jo is in New York and she begins to write sensational stories to a magazine called Weekly Volcano. Jo gets anxiety and even a mental breakdown with this work. Friedrich helps her to get out of this dark place. Unfortunately, majority of Little Women adaptations play it in a way "Jo is a feminist when she writes and Friedrich is a terrible person" when in reality Jo calls these stories "trash" and Friedrich never critices Jo's writing. He encourages her to find her voice as a writer.

  • Greta Gerwig's Fatphobic Comments On Little Women
    May 4 2023
Some of the criticism towards the 2019 Little Women, is the fact that a lot of the promotion of the film included several fatphobic comments from Gerwig regarding Friedrich's character. Obviously this is not ethical or morally correct. There is a problem within Little Women researh, because there are Alcott's scholars who dismiss Friedrich as a love interst for Jo because of fatphobia. Based on her diaries Louisa May Alcott seemed to have liked more stout and stacked men, and she even critices the looks of the skinny men who inspired Laurie's character. So the statements from Gerwig and these scholars are in contradict with Alcott herself.

Louisa May Alcott also suffered from body dystrophia. She became ill after her service in the Civil War and she was treated with mercury. The mercury treatment caused some major damage in her body and created mood swings, increased her weight and hightened up testosterone levels in her body making her look more masculine than she was and causing her constant pains. When her fans saw her they went away dissappointed because she wasn't pretty. In Little Women, there is an idea that love beautffies a person. Jo and Friedrich are beautified by their love, in each others eyes.

  • Religious Landscape Of Little Men (With Annabelle)
    Apr 20 2023
This time Annabelle and myself are discussing about religion in Louisa May Alcott's novels and counting all the transcendentalist references in chapter "Sunday". Transcanscentalism was a nature-centric form of Christianity. A philosophy that Alcott practiced her entire life. In Little Men Nat sees a beautiful painting of Jesus and children. The frame is made of moss and pine cones, which intrigues him.

  • Plumfield The Children's Paradise (With Annabelle)
    Apr 6 2023
In this episode, my guest Annabelle continues our discussion of Little Men and the chapter "Sunday". Little Men is the direct sequel to Little Women. In this book, we meet many of Jo's and Friedrich's students and get to see how they run their school together. Wild boy Tommy Banks shows the new kid Nat around the school explaining things. In her diaries, Louisa wrote about her desire to start a school and we can see many of her own educational ideas in Plumfield. Annabelle and I are also discussing about Alcott's views on religion and her love for nature.
