Against 3NT, the normal starting point is to lead your longest suit, although Chris stresses that this is not an automatic choice on every hand. Leading that suit starts the work of removing the opponents' cards and setting up your length, so your side has a chance to turn the remaining cards in the suit into tricks. It also shows partner where your length lies; if partner gains the lead, they can return the suit and help you keep developing it, which is why the longest suit is usually the practical lead.
