  • 53. Come essere elegante in italiano per il tuo prossimo viaggio
    Jul 7 2026

[B1/B2] Have you ever ordered proudly in Italian, only to have the waiter reply in English? It is not because your grammar is bad, but because you might be using the rigid, robotic phrases found in standard tourist manuals. In today's episode of Italiano a modo mio, we step away from standard grammar lessons to explore the hidden elegance of calm, natural, and nuanced Italian that will interrupt that automatic English response and unlock genuine local connections.

In this episode, we will cover:🧠 The English Reflex: Why Italian waiters switch languages instantly and why it isn't a critique of your skills. 🇮🇹 Beyond "Voglio": How to use the conditional and imperfect tenses to make soft, polite requests that sound deeply authentic. 🚶‍♂️ Quiet Navigation: Elegant ways to ask for directions or browse in shops without feeling pressured or making a scene. ✨ Rich Vocabulary: Replacing overused words like bello or buono with evocative terms like mozzafiato, suggestivo, and squisito. ✨ THE INTROVERT CHECK-IN:If you had to pick just one phrase from today’s episode to take with you on your next trip to Italy, which one would it be? • 52 - Un anno (quasi) di Italiano a Modo Mio: Grazie a voi (e a me stessa).
    Jun 30 2026

Today is a very special milestone: welcome to episode number 52! Exactly one year ago, I started this podcast with a simple, perhaps naive idea: to share Italian culture and help foreigners practice their listening skills. I didn't realize that Italiano a modo mio would become a laboratory where I would end up learning just as much from you as you do from me. To celebrate this first year, this episode is a bit different—it's audio only, a quiet space to reflect, look back, and say thank you. n this anniversary reflection, I share:🧱 Building Without a Blueprint: Looking back at the raw, clumsy early episodes and learning to appreciate the version of myself that had the courage to take the first step. 🎙️ The Introvert's Journey: How creating content as an introverted teacher turned into a beautiful way to step inside people's lives with discretion and care. 🌍 A Two-Way Cultural Exchange: The beautiful, unexpected stories you have shared with me—from ancestors who emigrated to modern summer romances and an unyielding love for Italy. 🤫 The Commitment to Honesty: Why I will always choose to tell you the truth about Italy, focusing on the real, complex, and sometimes imperfect aspects of my country over postcard stereotypes. Thank you for being part of this journey, for every single comment, and for helping me build this house, brick by brick. Here is to the next 52 episodes! ✨ THE INTROVERT CHECK-IN:Whether you have been here since episode 1 or just discovered the podcast today, I want to hear from you. Where in the world are you listening from, and what is one thing you have discovered about Italy (or yourself) through these episodes? Let me know in the comments using a few words in Italian! • 51. Il cliente ha quasi mai ragione: Il lato oscuro del servizio clienti in Italia.
    Jun 23 2026

[B1/C1] In the US or many parts of the world, "the customer is always right." But in Italy? The customer is almost never right! If you’ve ever ordered a coffee mid-meal or asked for parmesan on seafood, you might have met the fierce, proud resistance of an Italian waiter. In this second conversational episode with Eric, we explore the "dark side" of Italian customer service. From restaurants to electricians, we analyze why Italians don't always try to expand their business by bowing to the client, and how to protect yourself when dealing with local professionals. In this episode, we will cover: ☕ The Coffee & Cappuccino "Rules": Why refusing to serve a cappuccino with a meat sauce isn't just about snobbery, but a deep respect for ingredients and digestion. 🍕 Food as a Religion: Why a perfect Margherita pizza matters more to a pizzaiolo than the 10 euros you pay for it, and how tourists accidentally "offend" the culinary culture. 🛠️ The "Furbetto" Culture: An honest talk about why you always need to keep your guard up with mechanics, plumbers, or when buying a house in Italy if you don't speak the language well. 📜 Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware): Why Italian customer service works on a completely different philosophy, favoring small, fierce family businesses over massive corporate flexibility. 📺 Cucine da Incubo: Why so many people in Italy open a restaurant without knowing anything about food, and how the popular show with Chef Cannavacciuolo perfectly captures this reality. Get ready for some fast, natural Italian and a very transparent look at our country's quirks! ✨ THE INTROVERT CHECK-IN:Have you ever had a strange or "difficult" customer service experience in Italy? Or did you ever break one of the unwritten food rules by mistake? Share your story in the comments using a few words in Italian!LINKS:✨ DISCOVER YOUR LEARNING STYLE:My website is back online! • 50. Osteria, Trattoria o Ristorante? (Con Erich!) | Guida per non fare i turisti
    Jun 16 2026

[B2/C1] He is finally back! In this special conversational episode of Italiano a modo mio, Erich rejoins me to talk about a topic that every Italian learner loves: food and restaurants.

Since both of us worked for years in the Italian hospitality and restaurant industry, we are stepping behind the scenes to give you an authentic, unfiltered guide to dining in Italy—and how to spot real quality from marketing tricks.

In this episode, we will cover:

    • 🍷 Osteria vs. Trattoria: What do these words actually mean? From the traditional figure of the oste and shared long tables to family-run trattorias with unwritten spoken menus.

    • 🛑 How to Avoid Tourist Traps: Why you should run away from restaurants that stay open all day, and how the classic Italian lunch schedule guarantees fresh food.

    • 🏖️ The Beach Restaurant Guide: Welcome to the Tuscan "Bagni" (beach clubs). We explain how seafood logistics work in mid-July and why a panineria or a piadineria is often a better option than a fake fancy dinner.

    • 🥗 The Summer Routine: The anatomy of an Italian insalatona (the ultimate beach lunch) and the exact schedule of a perfect day at the sea—from the morning swim to the gelatino or aperitivo.

If you want to practice listening to fast, natural, and real Italian conversation (with some funny bickering!), this episode is for you!

THE INTROVERT CHECK-IN:When you visit Italy, do you prefer a quiet, traditional trattoria or a fast, craft panineria by the beach? Let me know in the comments using just a few words in Italian!

  • 49. La FOMO e la trappola dei social: Perché ci sentiamo sempre esclusi?
    Jun 9 2026

[B1/B2] Imagine being at a buffet. You pick your food, sit down, and notice everyone else chose the exact same dish—except you. Suddenly, a subtle feeling hits you: it’s not hunger, but the sense that others knew an unspoken rule you were left out of. That feeling has a name: FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). In this episode of Italiano a modo mio, we step away from traditional grammar to explore a very modern emotion. We look at how FOMO connects to ancient philosophy, how it turns into an industry through social media algorithms, and how to protect our peace of mind. In this Italian lesson, we will explore: 🍽️ The Social Element: Why FOMO isn't just nostalgia or envy, but a feeling deeply tied to real or perceived exclusion from a collective experience. 🏛️ Recalcitrant Emotions: A philosophical look from Aristotle onward at why we feel fear even when we rationally know we are safe. 🎰 Social Media as an Industry: How dopamine loops and infinite scrolls act like slot machines to trigger our vulnerabilities. 🗣️ The Validation Trap: Looking at the insights of Italian creator Antonio Martone on why we chase validation instead of true connection online. 🤫 The Teacher's Confession: How even as an introverted teacher, I sometimes experience a little FOMO through my own students! ✨ THE INTROVERT CHECK-IN:Let’s practice your Italian! Do you experience FOMO in your daily life—whether at work, with friends, or while scrolling? How do you handle it? • 48. Oltre il pallone: Cosa ci dice il calcio sull'identità italiana di oggi
    Jun 2 2026

[B1/B2] I am not someone who loves football. I don't follow matches, and I don't know the players. Yet, when I read an article about Italy failing to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time, I had to stop and reflect. Because behind the sports scores, there was a much more uncomfortable question: Who is a real Italian? In today's episode of Italiano a modo mio, we exit the classroom to look at contemporary Italian society through the lens of sports, modern laws, and social stagnation.

In this episode, we will cover:

⚽ A Historic Football Collapse: Italy won the World Cup in 2006, but has failed to qualify in 2018, 2022, and now 2026—a decline no other former champion has ever experienced. 📜 The Citizenship Problem: How the strict rule of Ius Sanguinis (citizenship by bloodline) shapes the country, and how the recent 2025 reform limits citizenship by descent to the second generation.

🗳️ The 2025 Referendum: An analysis of the recent national vote on citizenship, where the lack of a quorum revealed a deep social division and general apathy.

🌍 A Comparison with Europe: Looking at how countries like France, Germany, or Spain evolved by opening up to multiculturalism, while Italy looks on from the sidelines.

🏎️ Beyond Soccer: How younger generations (Gen Z) are moving away from football toward tennis (with Sinner), MotoGP (Bagnaia), and volleyball.✨ THE INTROVERT CHECK-IN:What do you think about this? How is the concept of identity and citizenship perceived in your own country? Share your reflection in the comments using a few words or a short sentence in Italian—I love reading your perspectives!

  • 47. Cosa mi hanno insegnato i miei studenti: Una storia lunga 5 anni
    May 26 2026

[B1] Today is a different kind of episode. There is no grammar point to analyze, no linguistic phenomenon to explore. Instead, there is a story—a slightly surreal, heartfelt story to celebrate my five years of teaching Italian. In these five years, I’ve realized that teaching never goes in just one direction. My students have taught me things that no book or course ever could: lessons on life, adaptation, strength, and the grace of surviving whatever life throws at you.

In this special anniversary episode, we will enter a metaphorical "Waiting Room":🕰️ The surreal setting: A place outside of time where all my students—past and present—meet for a moment. 🌍 Diverse Voices: From Idris’s silent strength and Amara’s resilience to the analytical passion of Thomas and Claire. ❤️ Life Lessons: What it means to leave your home and not be able to return, like Leila and Darius, or to face battles with the quiet dignity of Hanna. ✨ Reflections on Language: How Eleanor’s eighty years of wisdom or Pierre’s gentle spirit have shaped the way I see my work and the world. This episode is a "thank you" to everyone who has chosen to learn Italian with me. It’s a reminder that when we learn a language, we aren't just collecting words; we are meeting worlds. ✨ A MOMENT FOR YOU:In this metaphorical waiting room, I ask you the same question Idris and the others asked: What are you waiting for? Is it a goal, a feeling, or a change? If you feel like sharing, I’d love to read your reflection in the comments. • 46. Il Sud, i Segreti e le Donne: L'Italia raccontata attraverso 6 capolavori
    May 19 2026

[B1] Have you ever watched an Italian film and felt like you were seeing the country for the first time? Not the postcard Italy with gondolas and perfect sunsets, but the real one—inside people's homes, hearing how they actually talk, and understanding what they laugh about and what they fear. In today's episode of Italiano a modo mio, I’ve chosen six films—divided into three thematic pairs—that offer a window into Italian culture, history, and mentality. In this episode, we will explore:🏜️ The South & Its Stereotypes:Benvenuti al Sud (B1/B2): A funny look at the warmth and hospitality behind common prejudices. Qualunquemente (C1): A sharp, ungrammatical, and fierce satire of Italian politics. 📱 Secrets & Masks:Perfetti Sconosciuti (B2/C1): A dinner party "game" that reveals the secret lives we hide in our phones. Tutta colpa di Freud (B2): A modern romantic comedy about family expectations and Roman accents. ♀️ Women’s Resistance & Choices:Sette Minuti (B2/C1): A tense drama about labor rights and the value of a seven-minute break. C'è ancora domani (B2): The 2023 phenomenon by Paola Cortellesi about domestic violence and the power of the first female vote in 1946. ✨ THE INTROVERT CHECK-IN:Have you seen any of these movies? If so, what thoughts or reflections did they spark in you? Let me know in the comments—I respond to everyone!
