This podcast features the stories of people Giulia met and interviewed as well as books she read during her stay in Griffith in December 2025.     Meet Annalisa (Andrighetto) Surian author of "Cavasott in Australia". Annalisa was born in Cavaso del Tomba, Italy, in 1949 and she was not even 1 year old. In this podcast, she shares her personal stories an memories of a young Italian in Griffith. As an adult, she collected photos, documents, and family stories of her paesani who migrated from Cavaso del Tomba, Veneto (italy) to Griffith, NSW (Australia). After 12 years of research, she eventually published a book which represents an incredible lecacy for future genegrations. At the end of the episode, you will be able to hear the speech Annalisa gave at the Italian Pioneer Museum Renovatioon Showcase on 29 November 2025.

  • 02_ Roland Bannister – Music and Love. Lives and memories from Griffith, NSW

    Today, on Italian Australians in Griffith there is a very special guest, Roland Bannister, author of Music and Love, Music and lives of Italian Australians in Griffith, New South Wales.

    Dr Roland Bannister began his working life as a carpenter. He then studied at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music and Newcastle Teachers College to become a music teacher and trombonist. He taught at Glen Innes (GLENINS) High School, then Surbiton Boys High in London, and then - for 33 years - he worked as a music academic at Charles Sturt (START) University’s Wagga Wagga Campus. In recent decades he has pursued (P-RSUD) projects in ethnomusicology (the study of people and their music). Roland and his wife Marion now live in Roland’s hometown, Newcastle NSW.

    In this interview, we talk about how the book came to be and the role of music in shaping lives and identities of Italian Australians in Griffith, New South Wales, Australia.
