The lightning strike that hit D-CABB killed every instrument and both recorders in one instant, sending a six-year-old Metroliner III into a chaotic descent over the Ruhr River; the aircraft had about 9,200 flight hours and carried 21 people when it broke apart. How could two pilots with over 2,500 hours each and simulator training for electrical failure lose control when redundancy met regulation?
