Halloween night, 1998. I was driving home from my parents' house on Denton Road, a winding two-lane cut through the woods outside of Millbrook, New York. The road was empty—no other cars, no porch lights, just the occasional carved pumpkin flickering from a distant farmhouse. I'd seen the same stretch a hundred times, but that night something felt off. A man stood on the shoulder near the old Denton Bridge, holding a single lit jack-o'-lantern. He didn't move. He didn't blink. I slowed down, and the pumpkin's grin seemed to widen as I passed. Over the next few years, I heard stories: a drifter who'd disappeared in the nineties, a string of missing hikers, a photo found in a gas station—a jack-o'-lantern with human teeth. This episode is about what I saw, and what I didn't want to see.
