What’s it like to be a young carer in the UK? Where are change and support found right now - and how can we make a fairer future? In these intimate and urgent conversations, young carers and change makers meet to reflect on the challenges facing young carers today - from education to work, social life to bank balances. They reflect on what needs to change, but also where positive action is already being found - and what we can all do, today, to support the young carers in our lives. After all, with as many as 1 million young people in the UK with caring responsibilities - that’s between 2 and 3 in each classroom - supporting young carers should be everyone’s business. ‘Sharing the Mic’ puts young carers centre stage and presents an evidence-based call to action.

Created in partnership with the Carers Trust, this podcast is rooted in the ground-breaking research project ‘The long-term effects of being a young carer’, conducted by Dr. Becca Lacey and her team at City St George’s, University of London, and UCL - and funded by the Nuffield Foundation.

  • Young Carers: Creating a Fairer Future with Eden and Amy
    Mar 10 2026
What could a fair future look like for young carers UK-wide? What progress is already underway? Eden, a student and young carer in Northern Ireland is joined by fellow young carer Amy. Sharing stories of caring for siblings, they reflect on what “fair” would look like to them, and how the “mental load” of caring must be a political, not simply personal or private, concern. They’re also joined by Dominic Carter, Director of Policy & Public Affairs at the Carers Trust. He reflects on positive trends in new research, the importance of involving young carers in research that has an impact on them, and the value of events such as Young Carers Action Day. Plus: change doesn’t come through policy alone. So, what can we all do, right now, to support young carers? A rallying and hopeful conversation about where best practice and positive change lie. If you are a young carer seeking support or want to know how to support the young carers in your life head over to the Carers Trust website at carers.org or follow them on Facebook, X and Instagram. • Young Carers: Money, Work and Independence with Danny
    Mar 10 2026
Most young people need to juggle studying, earning and finding time relax. So what happens when caring - sometimes for up to 50 hours a week - is added to that? Young carer Danny is joined by Andy McGowan from the Carers Trust, and Jackie Woodhouse, Research Manager at the Learning & Work Institute to discuss money, work and independence. Reflecting on how young carers are more likely than their peers to come from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, they talk about what’s being done right now to make life fairer for young carers - including the recent ‘Young Carers Covenant’. They also explain why Carers Allowance needs urgent reform. Plus: how can we help young carers access not just any work, but quality work? How does helping the family help the individual? And why should we celebrate the particular skills that young carers can bring to the workplace. • Young Carers: Making Education Fairer with Isla and Oliver
    Mar 10 2026
How can education be made fairer for young carers? Young carer and student Isla speaks to fellow young carer Oliver, and Kit Rooney, Policy and Research Advisor from the charity 'The Difference’, which works to tackle the social injustice of lost learning in England's schools. They discuss the complex ways in which caring can impact attendance, the importance of consistent and clear avenues for recognition, and why it’s vital that young carers themselves aren’t left to do the work of finding each other and seeking support: schools should certainly have young carer leads, but all staff need to be in the know. Plus: why it’s crucial to ensure all young carers are supported at every transition point - from primary school right up to higher education. If you are a young carer seeking support or want to know how to support the young carers in your life head over to the Carers Trust website at carers.org or follow them on Facebook, X and Instagram.
