    Feb 26 2023

This week, we honor 39th President of the United States Jimmy Carter. As Carter has recently entered hospice care, he and his legacy have been in the news. This installment is an excerpt from the book I coauthored, The Presidential Lessons: Leadership Lessons from America's Chief Executives. Find out more, here:

  • Ep. 004 - Theodore Roosevelt: The Archetypal Lover
    Feb 19 2023

The lover may not be the archetypal model most readily associated with Theodore Roosevelt. However, on close examination of this archetype’s description and Roosevelt’s life reveals plenty of evidence to support the claim that Roosevelt routinely embodied this sometimes-misunderstood archetype. Today, we are not talking about love purely in the romantic sense, though that is an aspect of the archetype, and certainly was a feature of Roosevelt’s personality. As Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette describe in King, Warrior, Magician, Lover:

Jungians often use the name of the Greek god Eros to talk about the Lover energy. They also use the Latin term libido. By these terms they mean not just sexual appetites but a general appetite for life.

Roosevelt certainly had an appetite for life. Let us look at how his life of learning, strong family ties, and passion for his fellow citizens made Roosevelt an exemplary archetypal lover.

  • Ep. 003 - Theodore Roosevelt: The Archetypal Magician
    Feb 12 2023

In this third installment of my series relating Theodore Roosevelt to the four archetypes of the mature masculine, as described by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette, I will illustrate some of the ways Roosevelt demonstrated the magician archetype. You may rightly be wondering, “how in the world was T.R. a magician?” To find out, one must look to his impressive mental faculties.

The magician archetype represents the ability to transform and shape reality through the power of imagination, creativity, and knowledge. In many ways, Roosevelt embodies this archetype, as he was a man who sought to improve the world through his vision and action. He was a firm believer in the power of education and self-improvement and used his vast knowledge and understanding to shape the future of the country.

Let us consider a few ways that Roosevelt embodied the magician archetype.
