    In this episode, "Black History Month Spotlight: Tanisha La Guardia", the crew interviews Tanisha La Guardia, the Animal Ambassador Coordinator at the Tennessee Aquarium. Tanisha shares her heartwarming story about her early aspirations to become a midwife and how her fear of reptiles was overcome by curiosity and eventually love. Tanisha shares her love of ambassador animals with aquariumgoers and helps those around her to learn about the amazing animals that inhabit our planet!This podcast is brought to you by the upside down jellyfish of the genus Cassiopea. Upside down jellies lay on riverbeds and shallow ocean beds, allowing the sun to reach their undersides where photosynthetic algae inhabit their tissues, creating a symbiotic relationship. These are the only known species of jellyfish that are capable of sleep. Scientists found this out by observing tiny alarm clocks all over the substrate floor next to them. These animals have the smallest brain to body ratio, with a car sized body and a walnut brain. First discovered in the 1700s, much is still unknown about these odd creatures but we share everything we learned! Come learn about a fish without a real tail, that's covered in jelly-like flesh and parasites!This podcast is brought to you by Nemateleotris magnifica, commonly known as the fire goby. These fabulous little pyros have been known to conjure up wizard-like flame spells, turning their opponents into a pile of ash. They are used by blacksmiths to forge magical greatswords with dragon slaying capabilities. They inhabit live volcanoes, and the sandy bottoms of the Indo-Pacific oceans where they feed on small planktonic creatures.     In this episode, "The Life of Gars," the crew talks everything gar, with the GARgantuan “Gar Guy” himself, Dr. Solomon David. Gars have been around much longer than humans. It helps when you grow so big that you have no natural predators! They’ve somehow wrongly been characterized as a “trash fish” and Dr David is here to set the record straight. We learn about their evolution, reproductive strategies, distribution and much more! Solomon is doing great work in ecology and in science communication, getting the word out about these primitive ancient fish. This podcast is brought to you by the alligator gar. Nothing brings clarity to a name more than naming an animal after another animal, or a fruit after another fruit. Just ask the grapefruit or the dolphin fish! We took one look at this gar and named it after one of the most commonly known reptiles in America. Elongate mouth? Rows of sharp teeth? All very alligatorish. Why we chose this over the name “crocodile gar” we will never know. Perhaps it's because we often see gar’s later, alligator and not in a while crocodile.
