  • BONUS episode - Ine Vanoeveren on Brian Ferneyhough
    Jan 4 2024

This episode was recorded as a part of the 4th episode on Ine Vanoevren. But as we talked about a lot of interesting things, I had to make some choices and decided to release an entire special episode of Ine talking about Brian Ferneyhough and his music, including his famous Cassandra's Dream Song.

In this episode you can learn how she met him as a student in Dan Diego, some technical details about his flute music as well as some insights into the practical approach she developed when learning it for her doctorate.

Through this conversation, discover the man behind the New Complexity movement, the hidden "treasure behind the notation", and discover the details of the analysis of Cassandra's Dream Song by Ine Vanoeveren herself and on how we can rethink the stereotypical binary gendered symbolism that can lie beyond musical interpretation.

After meeting Anne La Berge online as member of faculty of Flute Xpansions Sonic Immersion, I couldn't resist asking her the favour to visit Splendor in Amsterdam and meet her in person.

We talk about flute bodies and human mechanics, singing in the style of Bach and Mozart, flute sound cultures, her path to composition, and most of all, we understand how one can keep waking up curious.

I met Camilla Hoitenga as member of faculty of FXSI : Flute Xpansions Sonic Immersion. (Thanks Shanna Pranaitis for all this!)

Her workshops were always informative, with a nice atmosphere, extremely inspiring. They gave me very interesting tools and gave me courage to create and share moments of music interacting with art.

One month later, I was in Darmstadt and was surprised to learn that Camilla herself was there too! And couldn't resist asking her the favor of interviewing her for this podcast, and I am very honored that she accepted.

I am very excited to share this privileged moment with you, and hope you like this episode as much as I do.

In this episode we talk about everything from food to flute practice, teaching, love, history, and trees going in the ground with the help of music. One part that stuck with me for a long time was the one about the true meaning of stage presence(s). I hope you will love this talk as much as I do.
