Whereas many soaps are only now focusing on diverse casts and stories after being on air for decades, Shortland Street has also focused on different cultures and communities, right from the first episode with Dr Ropata and the opening line of "Kia Ora, Shortland Street". This episode will look at the different ways Shortland Street has spotlighted NZ's diverse cultures, what impact that's had on the cast, and how they've ensured authenticity in representation.
