  • Fear Is a Liar
    Jun 19 2025

    Send us a text

Have you ever wondered what's truly holding you back from pursuing your dreams? The answer might be simpler than you think.

Fear can paralyze us in ways we don't even realize. Whether it's the student afraid to speak in class or the professional hesitant to pursue a passion project, these invisible barriers often stem from what I call "False Evidence Appearing Real." Throughout this episode, I share intimate stories of transformation – both my own journey from wallflower to confident public speaker and the inspiring breakthrough of an eighth-grade student who overcame his social anxiety to deliver a presentation that initially terrified him.

We explore several powerful interpretations of fear, from "Forget Everything And Run" to "Face Everything And Rise," examining how our response to fear determines whether it becomes a roadblock or a stepping stone. Through practical strategies like breaking challenges into manageable steps and gradually expanding our comfort zones, we discover that courage isn't about being fearless – it's about moving forward despite feeling afraid.

The most profound revelation comes through the stories shared: that moment when my student realized he had conquered his fear and could now face similar challenges with newfound confidence, or my own transformation through deliberately seeking uncomfortable situations like approaching strangers and speaking publicly. These aren't just feel-good anecdotes – they're proof that what seems impossible becomes achievable when we confront our fears directly.

What fears are holding you back? I'd love to hear your stories of triumph or struggles you're still working through. Share your experiences in the comments, and let's create a community of support as we all work to elevate our lives by facing our fears head-on. Remember to like, follow, and subscribe to join our growing community of "Elkyvators"!

  • The GLP-1 Revolution: Are We Solving Weight Issues or Creating New Problems?
    Jun 12 2025

    Send us a text

Weight loss injections are everywhere now - commercials, social media feeds, celebrity gossip. But are these GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic the miracle solution we've been waiting for or just another shortcut with hidden costs?

Having tried every diet imaginable - Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Atkins, keto, even the dreaded cabbage diet - I understand the allure of something that simply turns off hunger. That "food noise" can be deafening. Yet while these medications are genuine game-changers for people with diabetes or clinical obesity, their widespread use raises serious questions about our relationship with food, exercise, and our bodies.

The side effects can't be ignored. "Ozempic face" is definitely real - I've seen it firsthand. And what happens when you stop taking these medications? Most people regain the weight, sometimes with additional complications. Women face particularly impossible standards - we're criticized for gaining weight, then judged for using medical interventions to lose it. I share my own complicated journey with oral lichen planus, which limits what foods I can eat without painful flare-ups, making traditional "healthy eating" advice nearly impossible to follow.

The fundamental truth remains: sustainable health comes from creating positive habits around nutrition and finding joyful ways to move our bodies. For me, that's outdoor activities rather than dreaded gym sessions. A body in motion stays in motion - but should that motion come naturally or from a weekly injection? Share your thoughts on this controversial topic and subscribe for more candid conversations about health, wellness, and navigating life's challenges.

  • Confronting Your Past to Embrace Your Future
    Jun 10 2025

    Send us a text

In this deeply personal episode, I explore how our childhood experiences shape adult behaviors through the lens of "Your Inner Child of the Past" by W. Hugh Misseldine. The emotional goodbye to my graduating students triggers profound reflections on my own perfectionist upbringing and healing journey.

    • Understanding how perfectionist parents create adults who never feel "good enough"
    • Examining how punishment cycles from childhood manifest in self-punishment as adults
    • Recognizing why we often parent others the way we needed to be parented
    • Exploring the connection between childhood wounds and our adult behaviors
    • Learning how to look inward and heal the inner child through self-reflection
    • Embracing growth and self-improvement as ongoing practices
    • Acknowledging that healing childhood wounds takes time but is always possible

  • Men's Mental Health: Breaking the Silence
    Jun 3 2025

    Send us a text

June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, bringing attention to the struggles many men face but rarely discuss. Working with special needs students and being married to someone diagnosed with mental illness in his sixties has taught me valuable lessons about compassion and understanding.

    • Mental illness includes many conditions beyond schizophrenia, such as bipolar disorder, anxiety, PTSD, and autism
    • Depression is more than sadness; anxiety is more than worry; OCD is more than obsessions
    • Men in middle age to older ages particularly struggle with identifying and expressing their feelings
    • People with mental health conditions often deal with mood swings even while on medication
    • Early diagnosis and support can make a tremendous difference in quality of life
    • Being intentional in our communication and practicing kindness is essential when interacting with those struggling
    • Listen without judgment and create space for vulnerability

  • Breaking the Cycle: How Childhood Patterns Shape Who We Become
    May 29 2025

    Send us a text

Have you ever caught yourself reacting to a situation exactly like your parent would? That jarring moment of recognition—"I've become my mother/father"—sparked today's deep dive into the invisible patterns we inherit from our upbringing.

It all started with my admission about chronic lateness. After receiving feedback from a military listener about the importance of punctuality, I began examining why this has been a lifelong struggle. Through conversation with a friend who shares the same issue, we uncovered a fascinating pattern: our mothers would frantically stress about being on time, rush everyone else to get ready, only to become the cause of delays themselves. This childhood experience imprinted a contradictory relationship with time that we carried into adulthood.

This revelation led me to explore seven fundamental behaviors we unwittingly adopt from our parents: our reactions to anger and fear, approaches to mistakes and failure, ability to apologize, problem-solving strategies, conflict resolution styles, listening habits, and treatment of animals. I share personal examples of how these manifested in my life—from my mother's perfectionism shaping my self-criticism to her encyclopedic knowledge fostering my curiosity. Most importantly, I discuss how self-awareness has allowed me to recognize unhelpful patterns and consciously develop healthier responses over time.

What behaviors have you inherited from your parents? I'd love to hear your reflections and experiences in the comments. Remember to subscribe, share, and follow for more insights on personal growth and self-awareness. For just $3-10 monthly, you can support the podcast and have your business mentioned to our growing audience across the US, Canada, and UK. Your participation helps build our community of growth-minded individuals seeking to understand themselves better and break free from limiting patterns.
