Listening is an important part of being an audience. Yes, an audience is just as important in a speech, since there won't be any presentation if there is nobody to present it to!
Listening is not just hearing what the other party in the conversation has to say. Listening means taking a vigorous, human interest in what is being told to us. You can either take interest, or not take interest in the subject being explained.
Listening is important for both as a speaker and an evaluator, as taking important notes and important ques in the speaker's tone will differentiate those who recognize the importance and those who don't.
